Description
Nanny Goat Vineyard, established in Central Otago’s Queensberry sub-region, has built a reputation for producing site-specific wines that reflect the unique geology and climate of this cool, high-altitude area. The winery is known for its commitment to sustainable viticulture and minimal intervention winemaking, focusing on expressing the purity of fruit and the influence of its schist soils. Since its founding, Nanny Goat has prioritized small-lot production and careful vineyard management to maintain quality and consistency.
The 2024 Pinot Noir is sourced exclusively from the estate’s single-vineyard site in Queensberry, where cool nights and warm days promote slow, even ripening. Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in small open-top vessels, allowing precise control over extraction. A portion of the wine undergoes whole-bunch fermentation to add complexity and structural tannins. Post-fermentation, the wine is matured in French oak barrels - some new - to develop texture and integrate oak influence without overwhelming the fruit.
In the glass, this vintage shows a clear ruby colour. The nose is focused on red fruit aromatics such as cherry and raspberry, with subtle floral and spice nuances. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, balanced acidity, and earthy undertones. The structure supports a lingering finish that highlights the wine’s clarity and regional character.
Nanny Goat Pinot Noir 2024 is suited to dishes like roasted poultry, grilled fish, and mushroom-based recipes. Its restrained style and focus on terroir make it adaptable for both immediate consumption and short- to medium-term cellaring.
