Description
Bideona, an ambitious estate established in 2018 by Península Vinícola, is redefining modern Rioja by championing site-specific viticulture in the elevated limestone vineyards of Rioja Alavesa. The Viura de Cabezadas is a testament to the region's ancient bush-trained vines, most over 30 years old, meticulously farmed across wind-swept hilltops at altitudes around 500 metres. Emphasising sustainability and biodiversity, Bideona works with small local growers to hand-harvest Viura and a field blend of native white grapes, preserving the unique microclimates of the Sierra Cantabria foothills. In the winery, fruit is gently pressed and fermented spontaneously in a mix of stainless steel, concrete eggs, and a select portion of seasoned French oak barrels. The wine then rests briefly on lees, enhancing mouthfeel and structure while retaining striking purity of fruit and minerality. The result is a crystalline Rioja Blanco: expressive on the nose with green apple, preserved lemon, wild herbs and spring flowers, while the palate is taut, bone-dry, and saline, with nervy acidity and a persistent stony finish. The clarity of terroir makes this wine an exceptional match for seafood, tapas, or modern Spanish cuisine, offering both early-drinking freshness and potential for short-term cellaring.
