Description
Founded in 1829 and still family owned, Champagne Bollinger is based in Ay in the Montagne de Reims and pursues a Pinot Noir-weighted house style combining barrel fermentation, extended lees ageing and rigorous parcel selection. The Bollinger La Grande Année 2015 (Gift Box) is a vintage Brut Champagne using a blend of 60 percent Pinot Noir and 40 percent Chardonnay from eleven crus, with a higher Chardonnay share than usual to temper the vintage’s opulence. All base wines are fermented in oak barrels, followed by about seven years on the lees and disgorgement in May 2023 with a dosage of 8 g/L. In the glass it displays a burnished gold colour with a fine, persistent mousse. The nose offers red and black cherry, mulberry, cassis, bruised apple, salted almond, honeyed brioche, citrus peel and spice. On the palate the wine is dry, medium to full bodied and generous, with a silky texture, vibrant acidity and layered fruit (red cherry, wild berry compote, Mirabelle plum) supported by toasty oak, minerality and subtle bitterness. The long finish is saline, polished and resonant, making this Champagne ideal for pairing with foie gras, roast quail with fruit sauce, lobster or mushroom risotto, and capable of ageing gracefully for 15 to 25 years.
