Tasting Notes

The Clos Ostler Audrey’s Pinot Gris 2022 is a beautifully crafted wine that offers an elegant and complex experience from start to finish. Half of the wine was fermented in stainless steel, preserving its fresh, aromatic purity, while the other half spent time in oak barrels (12% new), where it underwent extended lees stirring. This technique adds layers of richness and texture to the wine, creating a luscious and full-bodied profile with delicate minerality.

On the nose, this wine opens with enticing aromas of poached pear, ginger, white peach, and jasmine florals, offering a tantalizing invitation to its vibrant flavor profile. On the palate, the wine showcases a blend of ripe Nashi pear, nectarines, and subtle lemon zest, interwoven with floral nuances and a hint of honey. A refined balance between freshness and a touch of sweetness ensures a precise, long-lasting finish. Perfect for pairing with a variety of dishes like pork belly bao buns or pan-fried fish, this wine will continue to evolve beautifully over the next few years.

Critic Scores

Tasted back in May and again on September 4th, 2021. This wine is still fantastic, in fact better. Fantastic bouquet with aromas of chalky mineral and white fleshed fruits, flowers and a complex lees autolysis. There’s a distinctive memory of Alsace grand cru quality about this wine. On the palate - silky, polished, ripe, fleshy and varietal with flavours that mirror the nose, medium+ acidity, some white spice and mineral leading to a complex harmonious finish. A delicious wine ready to drink upon purchase and through 2025+ Outstanding.

The striking 2020 vintage (5*) was estate-grown in the Clos Ostler vineyard and partly barrel-fermented. Bright, light lemon/green, it is richly scented, mouthfilling and vibrantly fruity, with concentrated, peachy, slightly spicy flavours, threaded with appetising acidity, and a very harmonious, dry (3.8 grams/litre of residual sugar), lasting finish. A delicious wine with layers of flavour, it should be at its best 2023+.

Bright, pale yellow, even colour throughout. The nose is elegant and soft, crunchy minerals, pear, yellow stonefruit intermix wildflower and honey. Medium-bodied, Nashi pear and nectarines have a pure expression, interweave lemon sherbet, lemon zest, unfolding white floral and honey nuances. A subtle sweetness nicely balances acidity, lingers with zesty freshness and adds interest. Oily texture mouthfeel adorned by a very fine powdery, chalky line, carry the wine to linearity. This is an elegant Pinot Gris with purity, posied details and mineral seduction. Match with pork belly bao buns and pan-fried fish over the next 6 years. Fruit is from Clos Ostler vineyard, handpicked, whole bunch pressed to tank for cold settling for 2 days, racked to tank and barrel for fermentation with selected yeast. 13.8% alc, 3.8 g/l RS.

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

Clos Ostler farms in the Waitaki Valley of North Otago, one of New Zealand's youngest and coolest wine regions, on the estate's single vineyard where limestone-rich, chalky soils give the wines their mineral signature. 'Audrey's' Pinot Gris is estate-grown, hand-picked fruit from this marginal, continental-influenced site, where limited heat and free-draining calcareous ground concentrate flavour while holding fine natural acidity. The 2022 vintage produced ripe, expressive Pinot Gris with the pear, stone-fruit and chalky-mineral character typical of the vineyard, and a dry finish supported by 3.8 grams per litre of residual sugar.

Vinification

Hand-harvested fruit is whole-bunch pressed to tank and cold-settled for around two days, then racked to a combination of tank and barrel for fermentation with selected yeast, a split that marries purity with texture and complexity. The wine is finished dry, at about 13.8% alcohol with 3.8 grams per litre of residual sugar, and shows Nashi pear, nectarine, lemon zest and white-floral honey notes over an oily yet finely chalky, mineral-driven mouthfeel with lingering, zesty freshness.

About this Wine

Central Otago

Central Otago is the southernmost wine growing region in the world, located at a latitude of 45 degrees south, on New Zealand’s south island. A spectacular landscape makes the region one of the most scenic wine regions if not in the world then certainly in New Zealand. Central to the region is the tourist destination of Queenstown, which is a great base to make wine trips from. Heavy mineral deposits in silt loams are typical for the soils in Central Otago, but is unlike any other region in New Zealand. The Otago region is the countries only ‘continental ’ wine growing region. Pinot Noir is the flagship red varietal, which is very well suited to the regions large diurnal shifts (a large diurnal shift means a big difference between low and high temperatures) and also the regions long, cool and dry autumn. The Pinot Noirs coming out of the Otago region are most often fragrant, lush Pinot Noirs with silky textures and true fruit intensity. Aromatic whites also thrive, in particular Riesling where anything from bone-dry to very sweet can be made. Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and lesser amounts of Chardonnay is also made to a very high quality. Central Otago is in Jancis Robinson’s top five New World wine producing regions.
