Description
The Greywacke Chardonnay 2022 is a benchmark Marlborough Chardonnay crafted by Kevin Judd to combine ripe fruit intensity with precision, texture and savoury complexity. Fruit was sourced from mature Mendoza and Clone 95 vines in the Brancott Valley, Fairhall and Renwick subregions, hand-harvested and whole-bunch pressed before undergoing fermentation with indigenous yeasts in French oak barriques, around 20% of which were new. The wine completed full malolactic fermentation and matured for 11 months on lees with occasional stirring to enhance texture and integrate flavours. Bottled at 13.5% ABV with a pH of 3.34 and total acidity of 5.7 g/L, it opens with aromas of lemon curd, brown sugar and vanilla custard, layered with ripe golden peach, caramelised fig and roasted nut notes. A flinty mineral seam and hints of wood smoke add further depth. The palate is layered and finely structured, with citrus and stone fruit richness balanced by bright acidity and savoury complexity, leading to a persistent, focused finish. Stylish and ageworthy, this wine will evolve gracefully over the next five to seven years.
