Description
The Ata Rangi Masters Pinot Noir 2021 is a single-vineyard release from a home block about 4 km south of the Martinborough Terrace, planted on gravel and clay soils that help retain moisture and regulate heat. Only the second vintage of this cuvee, 2021 was marked by early frost and a cool flowering period, leading to small, open bunches and low yields with concentrated fruit. The wine is composed of clones 115, 667, 777, Clone 5 and Abel, with around 70% fermented as whole bunches with indigenous yeasts and the remainder destemmed. Total maceration lasted 15 to 23 days, followed by malolactic fermentation in French oak, where the wine aged for 11 months (30% new), then a further 8 months in tank before bottling. Bottled at 13.5% ABV, pH 3.65 and total acidity of 5.2 g/L, it shows lifted aromas of cherry, damson plum, star anise, violet and cardamom. The palate carries thyme, nutmeg and pink peppercorn notes, with fine tannins, supple acidity and a savoury, stony length. Structured yet elegant, this Pinot Noir reflects its Martinborough site and will reward cellaring over the next decade.
