Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

Dog Point was founded in Marlborough by Ivan Sutherland and James Healy, both former long-serving Cloudy Bay figures, on established vineyards in the Southern Valleys and Brancott area of the Wairau. Section 94 takes its name from an original block of the estate and is a single, barrel-fermented expression of sauvignon blanc. The vineyards sit on free-draining clay-based soils over greywacke gravels and are farmed organically, with lower yields and hand tending giving concentrated, structural fruit rather than overtly aromatic wine. The cool 2021 Marlborough season, marked by a smaller crop, produced fruit of good energy and tension well suited to this more serious, oak-raised style.

Vinification

Unlike typical Marlborough sauvignon, Section 94 is fermented with wild indigenous yeast in seasoned French oak barrels, giving texture, breadth and a savoury dimension in place of overt tropical aromatics. The wine is then matured on its lees for around eighteen months, building the creamy, nutty, flinty complexity and weight for which it is known, before bottling. There is little or no new oak, so the wood supports texture rather than adding flavour. The extended lees ageing and barrel ferment give the wine its energy, tension and length, at around 14.5% alcohol, in a style built to develop with bottle age.
