Tasting Notes

The Misha’s Vineyard The Starlet Sauvignon Blanc 2024 is a finely tuned expression of Central Otago’s Bendigo subregion, showcasing the region’s ability to produce Sauvignon Blanc with both aromatic purity and structural depth. Sourced from north-facing slopes on free-draining schist soils, the fruit was hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and fermented cool in stainless steel to preserve vibrant aromatics, with a short period on fine lees adding subtle texture and complexity. The wine opens with lifted aromas of lemon zest, gooseberry, fresh thyme and nettle, layered with hints of peach, pineapple and a touch of savoury dried herb that speaks to its Central Otago origins. The palate is crisp and precise, with concentrated citrus and tropical fruit flavours framed by lively acidity and a fine mineral thread. A saline edge and lingering finish give the wine tension and length. Bottled at 13% ABV, The Starlet is refreshing in youth yet structured enough to evolve gracefully over the next three to six years.

Critic Scores

There’s no mistaking the scents of power and varietal pungency, pure fruit aromas of lemon, fresh thyme and gooseberry, pineapple and peach, then nettles and a fine lees and complexity. There’s also a signature of Central Otago with a savoury dried herb quality. Delicious, fresh and vibrant on the palate with a saline quality to the back one of acidity, also highlighting a sandy mineral theme. Fruit flavours mirror the bouquet with peach and citrus then some tropical fruit highlights. An excellent example with a lengthy finish, it is also a wine that speaks of Central Otago with a Marlene Dietrich-like sophistication – a touch of piercing elegance.

Vineyard Cultivation

Misha's Vineyard was established by Andy and Misha Wilkinson on a spectacular site on the edge of Lake Dunstan in the Bendigo sub-region of Central Otago, New Zealand. The estate covers around 57 hectares of high, north-facing terraces above the lake, farmed under a 'no compromise' sustainable regime that suits the region's dry, continental climate and marked diurnal shift. 'The Starlet' Sauvignon Blanc is estate-grown from these elevated terraces, where cool nights and long, bright autumn days preserve natural acidity and drive varietal pungency. The 2024 growing season in Central Otago gave ripe yet nervy fruit, expressed here through gooseberry, citrus, stone fruit and a savoury dried-herb character that the critics tie firmly to a sense of place.

Vinification

Hand-harvested estate fruit was pressed and cool-fermented in stainless steel using a mix of cultured and wild yeasts to build aromatic complexity while retaining freshness and drive. The wine was then rested briefly on fine lees to add texture and a subtle saline weight to the mid-palate before bottling under screwcap. The style is deliberately crisp, dry and lively, showing pure lemon, gooseberry, pineapple and peach lifted by nettle and a fine lees complexity, with a sandy mineral thread and a long, saline finish. There is no oak; the emphasis throughout is on purity, energy and site expression.

About this Wine

Central Otago

Central Otago is the southernmost wine growing region in the world, located at a latitude of 45 degrees south, on New Zealand’s south island. A spectacular landscape makes the region one of the most scenic wine regions if not in the world then certainly in New Zealand. Central to the region is the tourist destination of Queenstown, which is a great base to make wine trips from. Heavy mineral deposits in silt loams are typical for the soils in Central Otago, but is unlike any other region in New Zealand. The Otago region is the countries only ‘continental ’ wine growing region. Pinot Noir is the flagship red varietal, which is very well suited to the regions large diurnal shifts (a large diurnal shift means a big difference between low and high temperatures) and also the regions long, cool and dry autumn. The Pinot Noirs coming out of the Otago region are most often fragrant, lush Pinot Noirs with silky textures and true fruit intensity. Aromatic whites also thrive, in particular Riesling where anything from bone-dry to very sweet can be made. Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and lesser amounts of Chardonnay is also made to a very high quality. Central Otago is in Jancis Robinson’s top five New World wine producing regions.
