A portion of this wine was fermented in old French barrels, which enhances its texture through extended lees contact and natural stirring, without imparting oak flavors. This innovative method contributes to its rich, cloth-like texture and depth.

This Sauvignon Blanc is noted for its steely, mineral core and a balance that allows for a few years of evolution in the bottle. It offers bright acidity and unique flavors like gooseberry and wild strawberry, making it a standout choice for aging.

Tasting Notes

Rippon Sauvignon Blanc 2023 offers a masterful expression of New Zealand’s premium terroir, blending traditional techniques with innovative winemaking. This distinctive Sauvignon Blanc captivates with complex aromas of tatami mat, torched lemongrass, and beeswax, delivering a savory, textured mouthfeel that sets it apart from typical offerings.

A portion of the wine undergoes fermentation in old French barrels, a unique process that enhances texture through extended lees contact and natural stirring, known as bâtonnage. This method enriches the wine with a rich, cloth-like depth and a creamy consistency, without any overt oak flavors, preserving the varietal purity and bright character.

The palate reveals a steely, mineral core balanced by fresh, vibrant acidity and flavors of gooseberry and wild strawberry. Its finish is marked by a fresh green leaf note, adding a crisp, invigorating lift. This balance of bold acidity and complex flavors gives the wine an exceptional capacity for aging, allowing it to evolve gracefully over several years.

Critically acclaimed, the Rippon Sauvignon Blanc 2023 earned 94 points from Erin Larkin of The Wine Advocate, underscoring its quality and distinctive style. The wine’s complexity and refined structure reflect the cool climate of the Central Otago region, renowned for producing expressive, mineral-driven Sauvignon Blancs that deliver both power and elegance.

With its innovative winemaking, precise balance, and exquisite aromatics, this Sauvignon Blanc is a standout choice for collectors and enthusiasts seeking a premium, age-worthy white wine with a textural sophistication rarely found in the variety.

Critic Scores

Lots of lychee fruit and jack fruit on both the nose and palate. Medium-bodied with notes of stone, flint and some lime and spiced pears. Crispy and medium fruity.

Bright and golden. Reduction dominating here, hard-edged, crushed pill, then blackcurrant leaf and aniseed. Hints of manuka honey and beeswax. The palate has a raspy, acid-driven, salty and mouth-puckering gooseberry fruit with hints of wild strawberry sitting over a steely, tightly mineral and linear core. Not a varietal example, this is quite unique but it has tightrope balance, etched flavours and plenty of life to allow a few years' evolution in bottle

The 2022 Sauvignon Blanc leads with tatami mat and straw, torched lemongrass and brine. In the mouth, the wine is textural and concentrated—it has a cloth-y aspect, which is evident on the nose, but it sits very well in the mouth. This is savory, throaty and full and kept fresh through the finish by a splay of soft green leaf. There’s beeswax, lemon sherbet and a hint of juniper. 13% alcohol, sealed under Diam.

About this Wine

Central Otago

Central Otago is the southernmost wine growing region in the world, located at a latitude of 45 degrees south, on New Zealand’s south island. A spectacular landscape makes the region one of the most scenic wine regions if not in the world then certainly in New Zealand. Central to the region is the tourist destination of Queenstown, which is a great base to make wine trips from. Heavy mineral deposits in silt loams are typical for the soils in Central Otago, but is unlike any other region in New Zealand. The Otago region is the countries only ‘continental ’ wine growing region. Pinot Noir is the flagship red varietal, which is very well suited to the regions large diurnal shifts (a large diurnal shift means a big difference between low and high temperatures) and also the regions long, cool and dry autumn. The Pinot Noirs coming out of the Otago region are most often fragrant, lush Pinot Noirs with silky textures and true fruit intensity. Aromatic whites also thrive, in particular Riesling where anything from bone-dry to very sweet can be made. Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and lesser amounts of Chardonnay is also made to a very high quality. Central Otago is in Jancis Robinson’s top five New World wine producing regions.
