Tasting Notes

The fruit for our Pinot Gris is grown on the free draining river terrace of our home vineyard. Warm days and cool nights allow for a long ripening period guaranteeing ripe concentrated fruit while maintaining freshness.

The focus in the winery is to capture the pure fruit flavors that come from the vineyard, whilst adding complexity through our winemaking efforts to produce a multi-dimensional wine. This is achieved by tank fermenting the juice using yeasts that can ferment at low temperatures – preserving the essential fruit flavors.

This wine is a more Alsace style of Pinot Gris that is richer and more complex. The palate displays aromas of pear, nectarine and toasted almonds leading to a lingering dry finish.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

An undisclosed Pinot Gris from Martinborough, at the southern tip of New Zealand's North Island in the Wairarapa. The district's free-draining alluvial river terraces of gravel and silt, low rainfall and marked diurnal temperature swings give aromatic white varieties concentration, fine acidity and a mineral thread. Although best known for Pinot Noir, Martinborough's stony terraces also produce textural, structured Pinot Gris. The 2024 New Zealand season is presented as delivering ripe, pure varietal fruit with melon, pear and citrus-zest character. Producer, specific vineyard and farming detail are withheld under the Secret Deal format, so the wine is described by region and variety rather than a named estate.

Vinification

Consistent with a fruit-focused Martinborough Pinot Gris, the approach points to cool, gentle handling: pressing to preserve primary aromatics, cool fermentation to retain freshness, and a supple, juicy palate with a fine mineral line and a fresh, sustained finish. The luscious, faintly tropical fruit weight suggests fermentation stopped with a touch of residual sugar or a riper picking, while the clean finish indicates limited or no oak and probably little to no malolactic conversion to keep acidity crisp. Whether any portion saw lees ageing or old-oak texture is not stated. Exact pressing, fermentation and residual-sugar details are undisclosed for this release.
