Tasting Notes

The essence of Amisfield is intricately woven into the landscape it inhabits, harnessing the ebb and flow of the seasons to craft unique flavour profiles. The flavour inspirations are born from the dramatic weather patterns of Mount Pisa, a mountain range that both shields and challenges.

Highly aromatic with bright cherry and redcurrant, lifted red fruits coupled with savoury spice and dried herb offer an alluring and enticing nose. The palate is elegant and refined with fruit intensity matched with a supple and silky tannin structure.

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

Amisfield is a cornerstone estate of Central Otago, farming a large property at the foot of the Pisa Range near Lowburn, close to the shores of Lake Dunstan. Free-draining, nutrient-poor soils of schist, silt and glacial gravel, together with the district's dry, high-altitude semi-continental climate, suit slow and even Pinot Noir ripening. The estate is certified organic (BioGro), a transition led on the ground by vineyard manager Andre Lategan that takes in clover cover crops, sheep grazing, guinea fowl for pest control and native plantings for biodiversity. The 2022 season in Central Otago was cool and relatively low-yielding, delivering concentrated, aromatic fruit with the bright natural acidity that underpins the house style.

Vinification

Hand-picked estate fruit was fermented in small open vessels, typically with a proportion of whole bunches retained for aromatic lift and structure and a reliance on indigenous yeasts. After a gentle post-ferment maceration the wine was pressed to French oak barriques, a modest share of them new, for malolactic fermentation and around eleven months' maturation on lees before a light fining and bottling under screwcap. The winemaking is deliberately restrained, the aim being to let the organically grown vineyard speak, giving a wine of bright cherry and redcurrant fruit lifted by savoury spice and dried herb.

About this Wine

Pinot Noir

A thin-skinned red grape known for its light body, red fruit character, and sensitivity to terroir, grown around the world.

Central Otago

Central Otago is the southernmost wine growing region in the world, located at a latitude of 45 degrees south, on New Zealand’s south island. A spectacular landscape makes the region one of the most scenic wine regions if not in the world then certainly in New Zealand. Central to the region is the tourist destination of Queenstown, which is a great base to make wine trips from. Heavy mineral deposits in silt loams are typical for the soils in Central Otago, but is unlike any other region in New Zealand. The Otago region is the countries only ‘continental ’ wine growing region. Pinot Noir is the flagship red varietal, which is very well suited to the regions large diurnal shifts (a large diurnal shift means a big difference between low and high temperatures) and also the regions long, cool and dry autumn. The Pinot Noirs coming out of the Otago region are most often fragrant, lush Pinot Noirs with silky textures and true fruit intensity. Aromatic whites also thrive, in particular Riesling where anything from bone-dry to very sweet can be made. Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and lesser amounts of Chardonnay is also made to a very high quality. Central Otago is in Jancis Robinson’s top five New World wine producing regions.
