Tasting Notes

The Ata Rangi Brut Rose 2023 marks the Martinborough estate's debut sparkling release, produced in a particularly cool and unsettled growing season that lent itself to freshness and finesse. Made entirely from Pinot Noir, the fruit was hand-harvested at low Brix to preserve bright natural acidity, then whole-bunch pressed to extract only the most delicate juice. Primary fermentation took place in neutral oak on full lees, building texture and complexity, followed by 11 months of maturation before the second fermentation in tank using the Charmat method. The finished wine shows a pale salmon-pink hue and a fine, persistent bead. Aromas of pomegranate, wild strawberry and lemon zest are joined by notes of baked apple and subtle spice. The palate is dry and precise, combining red-berry fruit purity with creamy lees texture, a touch of shortbread and bright citrus lift, finishing crisp and mouth-watering. This inaugural release showcases Ata Rangi's hallmark balance and detail in a sparkling style best served chilled as an aperitif or with light seafood dishes.

Critic Scores

Beautifully restrained and delicately expressed, the bouquet shows pomegranate, lemon peel, crunchy apple and subtle spice nuances, followed by a linear palate offering pristine fruit flavours with fine texture and bright acidity. Focused and elegant with a mouth-watering finish.

A pale salmon-orange hue with a fine persistent bead. Aromas and flavours of lees autolysis, a whisper of white miso and white bread then peach and tangelo, with a mineral clay-earth core. Plush yet refreshing mousse texture underpinned by acidity, flavoured with peach and light yellow plum.

A fun and fresh sparkling wine with hints of strawberries and cantaloupe on the nose and palate. Light-bodied with friendly bubbles and a dry and crisp finish.

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

Ata Rangi is a pioneering, family-run Martinborough estate founded by Clive Paton in 1980 and now farmed by the Paton family, achieving organic certification in 2014. Sitting on the free-draining alluvial gravels of the Martinborough Terrace at the southern end of the North Island, the site's low fertility and marginal maritime climate suit fine-boned Pinot Noir. This Brut Rose, the estate's first sparkling wine, is built from hand-picked Pinot Noir grown on these gravels. The 2023 season in Martinborough was challenging and wet in places across New Zealand, making careful vineyard selection and early hand-picking for sparkling base wine, at lower sugar and higher acidity, especially important.

Vinification

The Pinot Noir was hand-picked early for freshness and whole-bunch pressed, with the juice fermented in neutral French oak using indigenous yeast to build texture without overt oak. The base wine was aged on lees for around eleven months, then given its second fermentation in tank by the Charmat (tank) method rather than traditional bottle fermentation, capturing the wine's primary red-fruit and citrus character with a soft, plush mousse. The finished wine is dry and crisp, pale salmon in hue, showing gentle lees-derived complexity. Alcohol is around 12.5%. Dosage was kept low to preserve the wine's linear, mineral line.
