Tasting Notes

Ata Rangi Chenin Blanc 2025 is a distinguished expression of New Zealand’s dedication to crafting world-class white wines. Originating from a small parcel of bush vines planted in 1989, this Chenin Blanc draws deep inspiration from the iconic Loire Valley, where the variety has long been celebrated. The vineyard’s original Abel clone, planted by founder Clive Paton in 1980 on a modest 5-hectare plot, now yields grapes that embody both heritage and elegance.

This wine is meticulously crafted, fermented with indigenous yeasts in a combination of stainless steel tanks and seasoned barrels, which contributes to its complex character. The careful aging on lees for six months imparts a creamy texture and enhances mouthfeel, providing a rich, layered palate without overwhelming the natural vibrancy of the fruit.

Delight in the Chenin Blanc’s crisp acidity balanced by subtle notes of citrus, white stone fruits, and delicate floral undertones. The wine’s purity and finesse make it a versatile companion to a variety of dishes, from fresh seafood to creamy cheeses, or simply enjoyed on its own.

Ata Rangi’s commitment to low-intervention winemaking and respect for terroir is proudly reflected in this vintage. The region’s cool climate ensures bright, focused flavors and a refreshing finish, making the 2025 release a promising addition to any premium wine collection.

Experience a beautifully textured, elegant Chenin Blanc that honors traditional craftsmanship while showcasing the unique character of New Zealand’s evolving wine landscape.

Critic Scores

Super bright, a very pale light straw appearance with a silver polish. On the nose and palate, taut and new, vibrant and still youthfully shy. That said there's no mistaking the variety with its red and yellow apple core framed by a waxy mineral seam and fine lees. Honeysuckle and a hint of white spice deliver breadth and complexity. Taut and very new on the palate with a squeeze of energy and urgency. Fruit and lees ideas return almost immediately with a backbone of acidity, lots of length and promise.

Vineyard Cultivation

Ata Rangi, founded by Clive Paton in 1980 and organically certified in 2014, farms the gravel soils of the Martinborough Terrace at the base of the North Island. This small-parcel Chenin Blanc comes from bush vines planted in 1989, among the older Chenin plantings in the region, grown Loire-inspired on free-draining, low-vigour ground that concentrates the variety's waxy, mineral character and firm natural acidity. Vine age and low yields give texture and depth. The 2025 growing season is a recent release; Martinborough's dry, breezy autumns generally allow Chenin to ripen slowly while retaining the bright acidity evident in the wine's taut, youthful, apple-and-lees profile.

Vinification

Hand-picked fruit was fermented with indigenous yeast in a combination of stainless steel and older oak barrels, preserving primary fruit while adding a subtle savoury dimension. The wine was aged on its lees for around six months to build texture, weight and a fine waxy, mineral seam, without heavy new oak or overt lees-stirring character dominating. It is bottled taut and youthful, with a backbone of acidity, honeysuckle lift and a long, energetic finish, reflecting the older bush-vine fruit. Alcohol is around 12.5%. The style is dry and made for both early drinking and short-term development.
