Tasting Notes

Craggy Range Te Muna Pinot Noir 2025 is an exceptional expression of Marlborough's revered Te Muna terrace, renowned for its ancient stony soils that impart remarkable complexity and character. This wine captivates at first glance with a deep scarlet hue that hints at its intensity and depth.

The nose is intensely perfumed, offering a fragrant bouquet of lavender and jasmine intertwined with rich, sweet spices. These aromatic layers unfold gracefully over ripe dark cherry and exotic incense notes, creating a nose that is both bold and elegant.

On the palate, this Pinot Noir is powerful yet seamless. The texture is luxuriously smooth with silk-laden tannins that melt effortlessly, delivering a commanding and expressive wine. The balance between bold fruit flavors and refined structure makes this release irresistibly seductive and memorable.

Crafted exclusively from select parcels within the Te Muna terrace, the unique terroir plays a pivotal role in shaping the wine's character. The region's cool climate and stony soils encourage slow ripening, resulting in concentrated flavors and vibrant acidity, hallmarks of the 2024 vintage.

This refined Pinot Noir epitomizes Craggy Range’s commitment to producing wines that are intense, polished, and of exceptional quality. A quintessential example of New Zealand’s premium Pinot Noir that pairs beautifully with a range of gourmet dishes or can be savored on its own.

Critic Scores

(2024 Vintage) From the Te Muna Road vineyard in Martinborough, for me, this is one of the very best Pinots we have seen from this legendary winery. Love it. 15% whole bunches are incorporated, with wild yeasts used, and maturation in French oak barriques, 24% new. The colour is a vibrant dark cherry/purple. The nose reveals notes of truffles, cassis, bay leaves, spices, a hint of milk chocolate and leaf litter. A silky texture, there is superb balance here, fine acidity, satiny tannins and excellent length, with the intensity maintained for the full journey. A wonderful Pinot for enjoying over the next decade.

(2024 Vintage)Taut, ripe, textured and delicious, a wine that reflects both the vineyard and region. A focused palate of dark cherry and baked red berry fruits, some dark plum and fruit spice, balanced measure of oak and lengthy finish. The mineral layer suggests baked brown and stone soil. Well made with plenty of length and definition. Best from 2027 through 2031+.

"Off the back of two difficult vintages, 2024 was, thankfully, a triumph. It shows in this bottling, for while this may be the less costly of Craggy's two top Pinots, it punches above its weight. A succulent combo of strawberry and blackberry with whispers of licorice, violets and dried herbs, there's ripeness and generosity that the previously cool vintages struggled to achieve, with plump, mouth-filling dark fruit flavors and fine sandpapery tannins. Youthful and still quite primary, it should age nicely over the next several years."

(2024 Vintage) "Deep crimson. Quite closed on the nose currently. Dark, purple-fruited expression with blackcurrant, blueberry and black cherry wrapped in woodsmoke, cardamom and clove. Dense and compact. The palate is very primary too, showing good concentration of ripe purple fruit all across the mid-palate before easing towards something more floral and spicy on the finish. Fine grained, late tannins sit just beneath the dollop of fruit. Very well made with plenty of promise, this young wine will relax and unfold over the next year or two. Its flavoursome mid-weight finish promises several years of evolution as it gains complexity and breadth 21 Aug 2025." Drink 2026 - 2034

Vineyard Cultivation

Craggy Range is a leading single-vineyard producer whose Te Muna Pinot Noir comes from the Te Muna Road vineyard at Martinborough, on the North Island of New Zealand. The site sits on an elevated river terrace of ancient, free-draining stony soils over gravel, a cool, wind-exposed setting that yields small, concentrated berries and gives the wine its structure and mineral depth. Select parcels from the terrace are chosen for this release; specific 2025 growing-season detail was not confirmed at the time of writing, though the vineyard reliably produces perfumed, dark-fruited Pinot of fine tannin and length.

Vinification

In the Craggy Range house style, the Pinot is fermented with wild yeasts and a modest proportion of whole bunches for perfume and spice, then matured in French oak barriques with a restrained share of new wood so the fruit and site character lead. The 2025 shows a deep scarlet colour, an intensely perfumed nose of lavender, jasmine, sweet spice and dark cherry, and a powerful yet seamless palate with silk-laden tannins. Exact 2025 whole-bunch and new-oak percentages were not confirmed and follow recent-vintage practice.
