Tasting Notes

Upon opening a bottle, swirling the wine in a glass, let it breath in wine speak, and you discover welcoming, uplifting aromas of rich black cherry, dark plum and a subtle herbaceous hint of Vipers Bugloss flowers. Those all together evoke instantly a sensory picture of Central Otago. The pleasant elusive bouquet uncovered intertwines beautifully with some subtle indication of mocha and spice, even a soupçon of wood smoke. The flavours revealed flow harmoniously onto the palate. The wine is richly textured and discloses an exquisite balance created by sensitive tension between refined acidity and velvety tannins. The warm, rich mouthfeel compliments the interaction between all elements and prolongs to a harmonious silky finish. This elegant classic Central Otago HAWKSHEAD Pinot Noir 2023 ‘Reserve’ is ready to be enjoyed now but has also great age.

Critic Scores

Still very youthful, this full, bright ruby red is mouth filling, vibrant and supple. (5*) It has concentrated cherry, plum and spice flavours, showing excellent ripeness and depth, nutty and savoury notes adding complexity, and a finely textured, long finish. Full of cellaring potential, it should be at its best 2027+.

This is immensely complex and enticing on the nose, showing dark berry, clove, dried mushroom, rich floral and cedar characters. The concentrated palate is both silky and robust with outstanding depth and persistency. Wonderfully framed by beautifully infused silky tannins, finishing superbly long and sophisticated. At its best: 2025 to 2037.

This barrel-selected Reserve Pinot Noir shows multilayers of herbs, spices and earthy details, with a bold structure, beautiful texture and length.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

Hawkshead is a boutique Central Otago producer owned by Denis and Vicki Marshall, with estate vineyards in Gibbston and fruit from the warmer Cromwell Basin. The Reserve is a barrel-selected Pinot Noir made only in favourable years, drawn from the best parcels. Vines grow on free-draining schist and glacial-gravel soils under a dry continental climate, where hot days, cold nights and a long autumn build colour, tannin and aromatic depth while keeping acidity fresh. Farming follows the house philosophy of restrained elegance and minimal intervention, with careful canopy and yield control. Each vintage is treated as distinct, the aim being a concentrated, age-worthy expression of terroir rather than a formulaic style.

Vinification

Fruit was hand-picked and fermented in small batches to extract fine, silky tannin. After fermentation the wine went to French oak barriques for maturation, and the finished Reserve was assembled from a selection of the best individual barrels, which lends its multilayered herb, spice, earth and floral complexity. The wine is concentrated, silky yet robust, with beautifully infused tannins and a long, savoury finish, and it carries considerable cellaring potential of a decade or more from vintage. Precise new-oak percentage and elevage length were not published for this release.

About this Wine

Pinot Noir

A thin-skinned red grape known for its light body, red fruit character, and sensitivity to terroir, grown around the world.

Central Otago

Central Otago is the southernmost wine growing region in the world, located at a latitude of 45 degrees south, on New Zealand’s south island. A spectacular landscape makes the region one of the most scenic wine regions if not in the world then certainly in New Zealand. Central to the region is the tourist destination of Queenstown, which is a great base to make wine trips from. Heavy mineral deposits in silt loams are typical for the soils in Central Otago, but is unlike any other region in New Zealand. The Otago region is the countries only ‘continental ’ wine growing region. Pinot Noir is the flagship red varietal, which is very well suited to the regions large diurnal shifts (a large diurnal shift means a big difference between low and high temperatures) and also the regions long, cool and dry autumn. The Pinot Noirs coming out of the Otago region are most often fragrant, lush Pinot Noirs with silky textures and true fruit intensity. Aromatic whites also thrive, in particular Riesling where anything from bone-dry to very sweet can be made. Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and lesser amounts of Chardonnay is also made to a very high quality. Central Otago is in Jancis Robinson’s top five New World wine producing regions.
