Tasting Notes

Central Otago Lowburn Riesling epitomises the strength, vitality and maturity of this increasingly celebrated variety. 2024 Hawkshead Riesling expresses a linear fruit acidity and a distinct mineral note along with citrus blossom florals, ripe peach and passion fruit aromas on the nose. All those vibrant impressions flow easily onto the palate to discover more flavour notes of lemon sherbet and tropical papaya. More poetic palates may also detect a fleeting memory of honeysuckle, or newly unfurled bramble rose leaves.

Critic Scores

"Bright, straw-yellow with some depth, lighter edged. The nose is presented elegantly, bright with gentle nuances of white floral and citrus, underlying honey, beeswax and stonefruit. Medium-bodied, dry-ish to taste, a taut core of lemon, lime, tangerine with its zest; intermix with lime flower and honey. Subtle white pepper and minerals unfold as it lingers to a crisp, citrus-fruited finish. Some residual sugar sweetness rounds the mouthfeel, balances the taut, mouthwatering acid. Citrus zest and a light phenolic grip bound stony minerals and crunchy acidity to a lengthy, dry finish. This is a citrusy Riesling with charming details and tension, presented with a rounded mouthfeel and dry, lengthy finish.

"'Bliss in a bottle', the 2020 vintage (4.5*) was grown at Lowburn, in the Cromwell Basin. Bright, light yellow/green, it is a powerful, full-bodied style of Riesling, hand-picked, fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks (97 per cent) and seasoned French oak barriques (3 per cent), and lees-aged for three months. Highly drinkable in its youth, it is scented and mouthfilling, with rich, peachy, slightly spicy flavours, moderate acidity and a dryish (7 grams/litre of residual sugar), very harmonious finish"

"It is delightfully fruited and elegantly poised, showing white flesh nectarine, crunchy apple, lime sorbet and floral characters on the nose, leading to a brilliantly focused palate that is delicate and linear. The wine offers whispering sweetness and firm acidity, finishing impressively long and vibrant"

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

Hawkshead is a family-owned Central Otago producer, New Zealand's southernmost wine region, with its Riesling grown at Lowburn in the Cromwell Basin. The Lowburn site sits on free-draining glacial and alluvial soils in a semi-continental climate of hot days and cool nights, conditions that give Riesling both ripeness and taut, mouth-watering acidity. The vines are hand tended on a boutique scale. The 2024 Central Otago vintage was regarded as strong, with a warm, dry ripening period allowing the fruit to develop concentrated citrus and stone-fruit character while retaining the vibrant natural acidity that defines the region's Riesling.

Vinification

Grapes are hand-picked and whole-bunch pressed, then the juice is settled for around 48 hours before fermentation. Fermentation is carried out at cool temperatures to protect the fresh, primary fruit aromatics of lemon, lime and tangerine, with lime-flower and honey nuances. The wine is made in a dry to just off-dry style, with a small amount of residual sugar left to round the mouthfeel and balance the taut, crunchy acidity, and a light phenolic grip framing its stony mineral finish. This is an unoaked, tank-raised style built for freshness, tension and length.

About this Wine

Central Otago

Central Otago is the southernmost wine growing region in the world, located at a latitude of 45 degrees south, on New Zealand’s south island. A spectacular landscape makes the region one of the most scenic wine regions if not in the world then certainly in New Zealand. Central to the region is the tourist destination of Queenstown, which is a great base to make wine trips from. Heavy mineral deposits in silt loams are typical for the soils in Central Otago, but is unlike any other region in New Zealand. The Otago region is the countries only ‘continental ’ wine growing region. Pinot Noir is the flagship red varietal, which is very well suited to the regions large diurnal shifts (a large diurnal shift means a big difference between low and high temperatures) and also the regions long, cool and dry autumn. The Pinot Noirs coming out of the Otago region are most often fragrant, lush Pinot Noirs with silky textures and true fruit intensity. Aromatic whites also thrive, in particular Riesling where anything from bone-dry to very sweet can be made. Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and lesser amounts of Chardonnay is also made to a very high quality. Central Otago is in Jancis Robinson’s top five New World wine producing regions.
