Tasting Notes

Huia, founded in 1996 by Claire and Mike Allan, leads organic and biodynamic practice in Marlborough. This sparkling is 100% Chardonnay, hand-harvested and bottle-fermented in the traditional method, with extended lees aging. The wine is bright, with fine bubbles, citrus, almond and a creamy, persistent finish.

Vineyard Cultivation

Huia was founded in 1996 by Claire and Mike Allan in Marlborough, New Zealand, and is farmed organically and biodynamically under BioGro certification. The Blanc de Blancs draws Chardonnay from the estate's Home Block and Kennedy Road vineyards in the Lower Omaka Valley, on the free-draining alluvial and clay-loam soils of Marlborough's southern valleys, where cooler sites and afternoon shade help retain acidity. Organic cover-cropping and hand tending support vine balance and small, concentrated bunches. The 2019 Marlborough season was warm and relatively dry, giving ripe yet fresh Chardonnay with the natural acidity needed for a taut, age-worthy base wine.

Vinification

The 2019 Blanc de Blancs is 100 per cent Chardonnay, whole-bunch pressed to protect delicacy and fermented in a combination of barrel and large-format cuve to build texture without overt oak. Following blending and tirage, the wine underwent secondary fermentation in bottle by the traditional method and matured on its lees for around four years, developing brioche, hazelnut and marzipan complexity. It was then disgorged and finished in a brut style. The barrel component and extended lees ageing give a fine, creamy mousse and a savoury, textural palate consistent with the estate's organic, low-intervention approach.
