Tasting Notes

The Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay 2023 is a testament to the exceptional quality and craftsmanship of Michael Brajkovich MW, one of the most revered names in winemaking. This Chardonnay has earned high praise, including a 93-point rating from James Suckling, and has been celebrated for its ability to compete with top Burgundy wines. Its crisp, fresh character is marked by vibrant citrus, mineral nuances, and a hint of spice, delivering a beautifully balanced and elegant profile.

Rooted in a family tradition dating back to 1944, the Kumeu River vineyard has evolved under Michael’s expert guidance to produce world-class Chardonnays. This 2023 Estate offering showcases the refined style that has earned it accolades, featuring a lively texture and a long, refreshing finish. With its impeccable structure and expressive flavors, it’s a superb choice for both immediate enjoyment and aging.

Critic Scores

This is fresh, crunchy and clean, with mineral and spice notes and plenty of salty undertones. Sliced lemons and apples. Medium-bodied with a fresh finish.

Compared to the Village chardonnay, there's a touch of extra concentration here. Barely ripe white nectarine, a little guava and red apple alongside the merest hint of flint. There is a strong spine of acid, but this provides structure for the fruit. A faint note of creamy malo adds another layer. Drink from now - 2028.

Vineyard Cultivation

Kumeu River is a family estate at Kumeu, north-west of Auckland, run by the Brajkovich family since 1944 and focused almost entirely on Chardonnay. The Estate bottling is a blend drawn from the family's mature vineyards around Kumeu, planted on heavy clay loams over sandstone and clay that restrain vigour and lend the wines their characteristic tension. Vines are managed by hand with close canopy work to manage the humid maritime climate. The 2023 season was warm and notably wet across the upper North Island, demanding careful fruit selection and attentive vineyard work to bring in clean, ripe fruit at moderate sugars, giving a fresh, citrus-driven style.

Vinification

Fruit was hand-harvested and whole-bunch pressed to preserve delicacy and limit phenolic pick-up. The juice was fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak barriques, a modest proportion of them new, in the Burgundian manner the family has long followed. The wine underwent full, natural malolactic fermentation and was matured on its full lees with stirring for roughly eleven months, building texture and a subtle creaminess without overt oak. This lees and barrel handling accounts for the spice and saline undertones noted by critics, while the cool clay soils keep the finish crisp. Bottled with a fine line of acidity intended to carry the wine for several years.
