Tasting Notes

The Langmeil Massimo Montepulciano Primitivo 2023 is a Barossa Valley red inspired by southern Italy’s bold, generous styles, blending Montepulciano and Primitivo grown in the region’s warm, dry climate. Sourced from low-yielding vineyards and hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, the fruit was destemmed, fermented on skins for depth of colour and flavour, and matured in seasoned oak to preserve fruit vibrancy. The wine pours deep purple and opens with lifted aromas of red rose, ripe plum, blackberry and dried herb, layered with hints of black olive and spice. The palate is rich and plush yet balanced, with juicy blue and red fruits wrapped in supple, suede-like tannins and supported by bright acidity. A savoury undercurrent and gentle oak spice carry through a long, satisfying finish. Bottled at around 14.5% ABV, this is an expressive and food-friendly wine best enjoyed with roasted meats, hearty pasta dishes or aged cheeses over the next five to seven years.

Vineyard Cultivation

Langmeil sits in the Barossa Valley on a site where German settlers first planted vines in 1842, and the winery was re-established by the Lindner family in 1996. Massimo is an unusual Italian-variety blend of Montepulciano and Primitivo grown in the Barossa's warm, dry continental climate, a departure from the district's Shiraz and Grenache heritage. The vineyards lie on the valley floor's sandy to clay-loam soils, farmed for balanced ripening in the region's reliably warm summers. The warm 2023 Barossa growing season suited these heat-loving southern-Italian varieties, allowing full flavour development and firm colour while retaining the savoury, spice-driven profile the blend is built around.

Vinification

The fruit was fermented in open fermenters with gentle hand-plunging to draw colour and tannin softly from the skins, in keeping with Langmeil's traditional, low-intervention reds. After pressing, the wine was matured for around twelve months in seasoned French and American oak, the older barrels chosen to add structure and integration without imposing overt oak flavour on the fruit. This élevage preserves the dark-cherry fruit and savoury, spice-led character of the Montepulciano-Primitivo blend while giving supple tannins and a rounded finish suited to earlier drinking.
