Tasting Notes

The Langmeil The Fifth Wave Grenache 2022 is the pinnacle of Langmeil's Grenache program and a flagship expression of old-vine Barossa fruit. Sourced from some of the region's oldest dry-grown bush vines, many planted in the 1940s and 1950s, the fruit is hand-harvested, gently destemmed and fermented in small open fermenters to preserve fragrance and finesse. After pressing, the wine matures for around 18 months in seasoned French oak hogsheads to soften tannins and build texture without overt oak influence. Bottled at 14.8% ABV, it pours deep crimson and opens with vibrant aromas of raspberry, cherry and red plum layered with clove, dried herbs and hints of potpourri. The palate is medium to full-bodied, balancing juicy red fruit purity with savoury spice, earth and subtle almond tones. Fine-grained tannins and bright acidity frame the wine’s plush core, leading to a long, silky finish. This vintage captures Grenache's hallmark elegance and Barossa depth, drinking beautifully now but with the structure to evolve over the next decade.

Critic Scores

The stunning 2022 Grenache The Fifth Wave is made from old vine fruit. It is seamless and radiates with cherry-ripe aromas topped by layers of meaty spice. The 2022 is expressive and vibrant, with a rich core of flavors well-supported by broad, firm tannins.

Aromas of cherries, plums, red candy, dried herbs and potpourri. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and bright acidity.

Vineyard Cultivation

Langmeil, in the Barossa Valley, was re-established by the Lindner family in 1996 when they rescued the historic Freedom vineyard and revived its heritage vines. The Fifth Wave Grenache is drawn from old bush vines planted in 1962 on the Barossa Valley floor, growing on the district's characteristic sandy and clay-loam soils. These deep-rooted, low-yielding vines give the fragrant, red-fruited and finely spiced style associated with old-vine Barossa Grenache. The cooler, later 2022 Barossa vintage favoured freshness and perfume, producing a wine with bright acidity, vibrant cherry fruit and the fine tannin structure noted by reviewers.

Vinification

Fruit was fermented in open fermenters with a combination of hand-plunging and pump-overs to manage a gentle, even extraction from the delicate Grenache skins. Following fermentation and pressing, the wine was matured for around fifteen months in older French and American hogsheads, the seasoned oak lending support and roundness while allowing the variety's cherry and meaty-spice aromatics to remain central. The restrained, older-oak handling keeps tannins broad but fine and preserves the vibrant, radiant fruit character of the old-vine parcel.
