Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

Lowburn Ferry was established by Roger and Jean Gibson, who planted their first vines in 2000 on a compact four-hectare site at Lowburn in Central Otago, beneath the Pisa Range near Cromwell. Roger Gibson, a soil scientist, matched varieties and clones to the free-draining schist and glacial-outwash gravels of the Home Block, a warm, low-lying parcel in one of the region's most distinctive pockets. The semi-continental climate of hot days, cold nights and low rainfall drives concentration and fine tannin. The 2022 Central Otago season was cooler and later than average, favouring slow ripening, bright acidity and the complex red-fruit, floral and savoury profile that gives this estate its Burgundian poise.

Vinification

Grapes were hand-harvested and sorted, then largely destemmed with a portion of whole bunches retained to lift aromatics and add spice and structural detail. Following a cold pre-ferment soak to build colour and perfume, the must was fermented with indigenous and cultured yeasts and worked gently by hand plunging to extract fine, dense tannin without harshness. After pressing, the wine completed malolactic fermentation in barrel and was matured in French oak, a measured proportion new, on fine lees to build texture and integrate the fruit. Bottled with minimal fining, it shows crunchy red fruits, lifted florals and savoury, meaty, earthy undertones over a fine, structured frame.

About this Wine

Pinot Noir

A thin-skinned red grape known for its light body, red fruit character, and sensitivity to terroir, grown around the world.

Central Otago

Central Otago is the southernmost wine growing region in the world, located at a latitude of 45 degrees south, on New Zealand’s south island. A spectacular landscape makes the region one of the most scenic wine regions if not in the world then certainly in New Zealand. Central to the region is the tourist destination of Queenstown, which is a great base to make wine trips from. Heavy mineral deposits in silt loams are typical for the soils in Central Otago, but is unlike any other region in New Zealand. The Otago region is the countries only ‘continental ’ wine growing region. Pinot Noir is the flagship red varietal, which is very well suited to the regions large diurnal shifts (a large diurnal shift means a big difference between low and high temperatures) and also the regions long, cool and dry autumn. The Pinot Noirs coming out of the Otago region are most often fragrant, lush Pinot Noirs with silky textures and true fruit intensity. Aromatic whites also thrive, in particular Riesling where anything from bone-dry to very sweet can be made. Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and lesser amounts of Chardonnay is also made to a very high quality. Central Otago is in Jancis Robinson’s top five New World wine producing regions.
