Critic Scores

There’s an immediate place and time, power and variety with scents of dark cherry and savoury wild dried herb, some plum and fruit spice then barrel with a mild toasty anise anise and clove suggestion. There’s also a mineral core of stone and hard sandy clay. The palate mirrors the bouquet with core cherry and dried raspberry fruit flavours, firm tannins and plenty of cool climate acidity, layers of wood spice and mineral. Dry, lengthy, complex and still new. A lovely example with best drinking from 2024 through 2034+.

Estate-grown at Bendigo, the very elegant, youthful 2021 vintage (5*) of "our main estate Pinot Noir" was hand-harvested and matured in French oak hogsheads (18 per cent new). Deep, bright ruby, with a fragrant, floral bouquet, it is mouthfilling, savoury and supple, with ripe cherry and spice flavours, seasoned with nutty oak, fresh acidity, good complexity and a very harmonious, lingering finish. Best drinking 2025+.

Pristine with elegant complexity, the enticing bouquet shows ripe cherry, thyme, floral and roasted nut aromas with a hint of savoury mushroom nuance. The palate displays excellent weight and fine texture, wonderfully framed by elegantly infused tannins. Harmonious and beautifully layered with a persistent silky finish. At its best now to 2034.”

Deep, ruby-red, lighter on the rim. The nose is gently full, with aromas of cherry, raspberry, rosehip, herb and spice. Medium-full bodied, richer on the palate with aromas of cherry, raspberry and a savoury edge, entwined with rosehip, wild thyme, liquorice, earth and black pepper. The wine is structured with a fine tannin framework, unfolding dark herbs and spice details with a dry, red-fruited background. Integrated, fine acidity carries a long, broody finish. This savoury Pinot Noir has a velvety mouthfeel with dark herb, earth and spice front and red-fruited support. Match with herb-crushed lamb and beef bourguignon over the next 6+ years. Cold-soaked for 5-7 days, natural yeasts fermented with 12% whole bunches, skin contact for an average of 26 days, aged in French oak hogsheads (18% new 300-litre barrels).

Mellow pinot noir with red cherry, fresh herbs, floral/violet notes and spicy oak flavours. Taut, refreshingly dry with a pleasing undercurrent of fruit/alcohol sweetness. Accessible now but should develop well with bottle age.

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

Misha's Vineyard was established by Misha and Andy Wilson on the elevated Bendigo terraces above Lake Dunstan in Central Otago, a warm, north-facing sub-region prized for structured Pinot Noir. 'The High Note', named in honour of Misha's opera-singing mother, is the estate's main Pinot Noir, grown on the vineyard's schist-derived, free-draining soils in a dry continental climate of hot days and cold nights. The 2021 vintage was a low-yielding, high-quality Central Otago season, with a warm, dry summer concentrating small berries and delivering the ripe cherry fruit, savoury spice and cool-climate acidity that define this elegant, age-worthy wine.

Vinification

Fruit was hand-harvested from the Bendigo estate and fermented in the winery's small-batch, site-focused manner, with cool maceration to build the wine's firm but fine tannin structure and layered spice. Following fermentation, the wine was matured in French oak hogsheads, around eighteen per cent of them new, so the oak seasons rather than masks the fruit. Extended barrel ageing built complexity, savoury nuance and a persistent, silky texture while retaining fresh, cool-climate acidity. The result is a dry, lengthy and complex Pinot Noir, still youthful on release and structured for long-term cellaring.

About this Wine

Pinot Noir

A thin-skinned red grape known for its light body, red fruit character, and sensitivity to terroir, grown around the world.

Central Otago

Central Otago is the southernmost wine growing region in the world, located at a latitude of 45 degrees south, on New Zealand’s south island. A spectacular landscape makes the region one of the most scenic wine regions if not in the world then certainly in New Zealand. Central to the region is the tourist destination of Queenstown, which is a great base to make wine trips from. Heavy mineral deposits in silt loams are typical for the soils in Central Otago, but is unlike any other region in New Zealand. The Otago region is the countries only ‘continental ’ wine growing region. Pinot Noir is the flagship red varietal, which is very well suited to the regions large diurnal shifts (a large diurnal shift means a big difference between low and high temperatures) and also the regions long, cool and dry autumn. The Pinot Noirs coming out of the Otago region are most often fragrant, lush Pinot Noirs with silky textures and true fruit intensity. Aromatic whites also thrive, in particular Riesling where anything from bone-dry to very sweet can be made. Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and lesser amounts of Chardonnay is also made to a very high quality. Central Otago is in Jancis Robinson’s top five New World wine producing regions.
