Tasting Notes

The Nautilus Albarino 2025 is a vibrant and textural white wine from Marlborough, showcasing the variety’s hallmark freshness and maritime character. Sourced from select vineyard parcels and harvested at optimal ripeness, the fruit was cool-fermented in stainless steel to preserve purity and aromatic intensity, with a short period on lees to enhance texture and depth. Bottled at 13.0% ABV under screwcap, the wine opens with lifted aromas of white peach, ripe pear and mandarin zest, complemented by hints of citrus blossom and sea spray. The palate is bright and focused, combining juicy stone fruit and citrus flavours with a subtle saline minerality that adds tension and length. Crisp acidity drives a long, dry finish, making this an excellent companion for seafood, grilled shellfish or light Mediterranean dishes. Enjoy now for its energy and precision or over the next three to five years as complexity builds in bottle.

Vineyard Cultivation

Nautilus Estate, established in 1985 and part of the Hunt family's Negociants operation, draws on estate and grower vineyards across Marlborough's Wairau and Awatere Valleys and the Southern Valleys. Albarino, a Spanish variety native to Galicia's Rias Baixas, suits the cooler, windier Awatere, where free-draining stony soils and coastal influence give saline drive and firm acidity. Fruit is sourced across sub-regional sites to build complexity, with sustainable viticulture underpinning the estate's approach. The 2025 Marlborough season is drawn on for citrus-fresh, mineral fruit picked to retain the variety's crisp natural acidity.

Vinification

Fruit was harvested and cool-fermented in stainless steel to capture Albarino's citrus, orchard-fruit and floral character. A short period on fine lees added texture and mid-palate weight without masking the variety's mineral, saline edge. Malolactic fermentation was avoided to retain crisp natural acidity, and the wine saw no oak, preserving freshness and primary fruit. Stainless-steel handling throughout kept the emphasis on precision and drive, and the wine was bottled young under screwcap for early drinking.
