Critic Scores

"Immensely charming and fine, showing sweet strawberry, apricot, fig and floral aromas with a lovely oatmeal complexity. The palate is supremely elegant and flowing, beautifully complemented by bright ..."

"No.1 Rosé is the best pink bubbly in New Zealand in terms of sheer delicious savoury depth of flavour, complexity and quality. It's made entirely from Pinot Noir grapes, which provide its pronounced toasty aromas, flavours of dried raspberries, full body and beautifully lingering taste in every delicious sip."

"Enticing, pretty and complex. A beautiful bouquet of white flowers and delicate red berry fruit scents. Plush, elegant, fine and delicious on the palate, a satin texture touches first followed by a soft and caressing mousse, and with the acidity transports flavours across the palate. Red apple and light red berry fruits, there's a seamless link between the autolysis flavours and fruit leading to a lengthy and delicious finish. A wine perfect as an aperitif and with fresh cheeses or seafood."

Vineyard Cultivation

No.1 Family Estate, founded in Marlborough by Champenois vigneron Daniel Le Brun and his wife Adele, specialises in traditional-method sparkling wine. The Rose Brut is made entirely from Pinot Noir grown on the Wairau Valley's free-draining alluvial gravels, where Marlborough's cool climate and long ripening season preserve the high acidity and delicate red-fruit character suited to sparkling rose. As a non-vintage wine it is built from a base of estate and Marlborough Pinot Noir, picked early and selected for finesse rather than power.

Vinification

The Pinot Noir was gently pressed to give the wine its pale salmon-pink hue, the base wine fermented dry before secondary fermentation in bottle. Extended lees ageing developed the oatmeal and toasty autolytic complexity noted by critics, alongside strawberry, apricot and dried-raspberry fruit. After riddling and disgorgement the wine was finished as a Brut with a fine, persistent mousse and a satin texture.
