Tasting Notes

Twenty-One-Twelve is Paritua's flagship wine, produced only in exceptional years from the estate's oldest and lowest-yielding blocks. The 2021 blend features 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Cabernet Franc and 12% Merlot, all hand harvested and sorted before a long maceration. Fermentation in closed vats with pump-overs and plunging was followed by basket pressing to French oak barriques, half new, for up to 24 months of maturation. Deeply coloured and structured, the wine offers aromas of blackberry, plum and blackcurrant layered with cocoa, baking spice and oyster shell. The palate is full-bodied and polished, with ripe fruit, vibrant acidity and firm but elegant tannins. Bottled at 14% ABV, this wine will reward a decade or more of careful cellaring, gaining complexity and silkiness.

Critic Scores

This is a stunning blend with concentrated flavour of perfectly ripe fruit and balanced acidity, elegantly complex barrel details on a fine-structured palate.

Immensely complex and engaging, this is a concentrated and richly textured red with a wonderfully layered palate offering dark fruit, floral, spice and nutty characters. It’s impressively long and structured, making it a great candidate for long-term cellaring. At its best now to 2038.

A fantastic wine with concentration, complexity, power and presence. Flavours of dark berries, dark plums, cacao and toasty baking spices from wood and bottle settling harmony. A dry full-bodied wine with an equal amount of power and complexity framing the flavours of dark red berries and plums, cinnamon and vanilla, clove and baking spices. An abundance of tannins are polished and along with the acidity frame the fruit and mouthfeel perfectly. Tasted over 3 days the wine is as delicious on day three as it was on day one. Lengthy, complex and delicious with best drinking from 2027 through 2037+.

A firmly structured wine with great cellaring potential. Drink 2021–2033.

An impressively concentrated and ripe display of berry fruit, blackcurrant, anise and plum with charry oak, roasting coffee and cocoa nib. Masses of structure here but well-submerged and with just a touch of heat on the finish. The fruit is currently very primary. Concentrated, dense flavours with opulent weight and velvet-textured tannins compete for attention in this muscular, powerful and bold wine. Give it a long sleep in the cellar to get the most out of it, but there is enough balance and depth already to be enjoyable if needs must.

Vineyard Cultivation

Paritua, established in 2003, farms an estate vineyard at Bridge Pa in Hawke's Bay on New Zealand's North Island. Twenty-One-Twelve (21:12) is the estate's flagship Bordeaux blend, made only in exceptional years from its oldest, lowest-yielding blocks. The warm, free-draining gravelly and clay-loam soils of the Bridge Pa Triangle suit late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The 2021 Hawke's Bay vintage was widely regarded as outstanding for reds, a warm, dry and low-yielding season giving deeply concentrated, ripe fruit. Sustainable viticulture and hand harvesting underpin the wine.

Vinification

The 2021 blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Cabernet Franc and 12% Merlot was hand-harvested and sorted, then cold-soaked before fermentation with pump-overs and plunging, and maceration extended up to 28 days. Malolactic fermentation took place before basket-pressing to French oak barriques, around half new, where the wine matured for roughly 24 months. Final blending was completed well ahead of bottling. The result is a deeply coloured, structured red with dark fruit, cacao and baking spice, framed by polished tannins.
