Tasting Notes

As described in Robert Parker's Wine Advocate by Lisa Perrotti-Brown: "You may think you know New Zealand wines but I can assure you that until you have tasted Pyramid Valley, you have no idea.

Bright appearance with a deep crimson hue. Deep brooding nose of plum and blue fruits with lifted floral spicy notes. Full bodied Pinot Noir with ripe, rich fruits, mouth filling texture and round plush tannins giving the wine weight and power with a savoury moreish finish.

Critic Scores

"Complex , savoury, a core of pinosity, red berries and mineralaity showcase the bouquet. Red berries and dried herb, a savoury cherry quality, red currant and chalky texture from tannins. Acidity layers in a robustness to a youthful mouthfeel overall. Complex and layered with each new taste, a fine wine with energy, floral highlights and lengthy detailed finish. Great drinking from late 2023 through 2030+."

"Enticing and complex, the bouquet shows spiced cherry, dried herb, smoked game and toasted nut characters, followed by a concentrated palate delivering richly textured mouthfeel backed by fine chalky tannins. Wonderfully structured, making it a fabulous food partner. At its best: now to 2029. $50.00. www.pyramidvalley.co.nz. March 2021."

"Raspberries, cherries and baking spices on the nose. It’s medium-bodied with vivid acidity. Crunchy and juicy with a succulent finish. Quite chewy tannins. Lots of earthy and spicy undertones with some graphite and slate undertones. A little austere at the end, suggesting that two or three years of bottle age will help."

Vineyard Cultivation

This is Pyramid Valley's North Canterbury Pinot Noir, a regional wine drawing on organically and biodynamically farmed fruit from the Waikari district and surrounds, complementing the estate's rarer single-block bottlings. North Canterbury's limestone and clay soils, warm days and cool nights give Pinot Noir a savoury, mineral profile often compared to good Burgundy. The estate holds biodynamic certification and applies the same careful, low-intervention farming across its sourcing. The 2019 season in North Canterbury was warm and favourable, producing ripe red-fruited grapes with fresh acidity and fine tannin. The wine is designed as an accessible expression of the region's character, with the pinosity, red-berry fruit and chalky texture that mark the house style.

Vinification

Fruit is hand-picked and largely destemmed, then fermented with wild yeasts in a gentle, low-extraction manner consistent with the estate's approach, building a concentrated but finely textured palate framed by chalky tannins. After fermentation the wine matures in French oak, a modest proportion new, for an extended period before bottling, developing spiced cherry, dried herb and smoked-game complexity. Minimal intervention in the cellar preserves the wine's savoury, mineral character and vivid acidity. The result is a robustly structured yet elegant Pinot Noir intended as a versatile food wine, with some critics suggesting a few years of bottle age to soften its youthful austerity. Exact whole-bunch and new-oak proportions are unconfirmed.
