Critic Scores

Classic, fresh, complex and inviting bouquet with aromas of brioche and peach, fresh citrus and apple. Overall an elegant, precise bouquet. Dry, saline, core of ripe white fleshed fruits and citrus, a wonderful texture from the mousse with a firm, fine bubble and lengthy lees brioche finish. A delicious wine, a perfect aperitif expression, balanced and well made with best drinking from day of purchase through 2029.

Vineyard Cultivation

Quartz Reef was founded in 1996 by Austrian-born Rudi Bauer at Bendigo, on the northern side of Central Otago's Cromwell Basin in New Zealand. The estate Bendigo vineyard sits on a north-facing terrace of free-draining schist and loess, farmed biodynamically and Demeter-certified. Central Otago's semi-continental climate brings hot days, cold nights and a long, dry autumn, giving small crops of intensely flavoured Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with naturally high acidity, ideal for sparkling base wine. As a non-vintage cuvee, the Methode Traditionnelle draws on a core current-harvest base blended with reserve material to hold a consistent house style.

Vinification

Fruit for the sparkling base is hand-picked early to retain acidity and whole-bunch pressed to take only the clean, free-run juice. After primary fermentation the still wines are blended, with a portion of reserve wine, then bottled for a second fermentation in bottle following the traditional method. The wine is matured on lees for an extended period to build biscuity autolytic complexity before hand riddling and disgorgement, and is finished as a Brut with a modest dosage. The base blend is Pinot Noir with Chardonnay. Exact lees ageing time and dosage NEEDS VERIFICATION.

About this Wine

Central Otago

Central Otago is the southernmost wine growing region in the world, located at a latitude of 45 degrees south, on New Zealand’s south island. A spectacular landscape makes the region one of the most scenic wine regions if not in the world then certainly in New Zealand. Central to the region is the tourist destination of Queenstown, which is a great base to make wine trips from. Heavy mineral deposits in silt loams are typical for the soils in Central Otago, but is unlike any other region in New Zealand. The Otago region is the countries only ‘continental ’ wine growing region. Pinot Noir is the flagship red varietal, which is very well suited to the regions large diurnal shifts (a large diurnal shift means a big difference between low and high temperatures) and also the regions long, cool and dry autumn. The Pinot Noirs coming out of the Otago region are most often fragrant, lush Pinot Noirs with silky textures and true fruit intensity. Aromatic whites also thrive, in particular Riesling where anything from bone-dry to very sweet can be made. Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and lesser amounts of Chardonnay is also made to a very high quality. Central Otago is in Jancis Robinson’s top five New World wine producing regions.
