Tasting Notes

Tatty Bogler draws its Pinot Gris from the Waitaki Valley, one of the most extreme viticultural zones in the country - located 40km inland and flanked by limestone escarpments and alpine ranges. The region's cool nights and stony, free-draining soils yield fruit of intense aromatic clarity and mineral structure. In 2024, grapes were split between stainless steel and seasoned French oak barriques, with three months' lees contact to enhance texture and palate shape. Bottled at 13.5% ABV, the wine shows 6.2g/L total acidity and a pH of 3.4. Aromas of honeysuckle, white melon and baking spice lead into a palate of apricot, ripe pear and quince, underscored by creamy lees and chalky mineral grip. This is a highly versatile expression - supple yet structured - ideal with poultry, pork or fragrant Southeast Asian dishes.

Vineyard Cultivation

Tatty Bogler is Forrest Wines' Waitaki Valley range, drawing Pinot Gris from one of New Zealand's most extreme viticultural zones, roughly 40 km inland in North Otago and flanked by limestone escarpments and alpine ranges. Cool nights and stony, free-draining soils of limestone and river gravels yield fruit of intense aromatic clarity and a distinctive mineral structure. The marginal, cool climate keeps crops low and naturally acidic. In 2024 the vineyard produced concentrated, aromatic Pinot Gris fruit, carrying the honeysuckle, spice and stone-fruit character and the chalky mineral grip for which the site is known. The label honours the region's rugged, pioneering character.

Vinification

The 2024 fruit was split between stainless steel and seasoned French oak barriques, roughly half and half, and given around three months on lees to build texture and palate shape. The stainless-steel portion preserves the wine's bright honeysuckle, white-melon and baking-spice aromatics and its natural acid line, while the barrique-fermented fraction and lees contact add creaminess and a fuller mid-palate. Malolactic was managed to retain freshness, and no new oak character intrudes. The finished wine, at 13.5 per cent alcohol with around 6.2 g/L total acidity and a pH near 3.4, shows apricot, ripe pear and quince over a creamy, chalky, mineral-driven structure – supple yet structured.
