Critic Scores

Red and blue fruit, cracked pepper, jasmine
perfume, nutmeg and biscuit spices.
Medium-bodied.. juicy red and blue fruit,
toasted hazelnut and quite some spice,
finishing long with a firm graphite grip
to tannin and a savoury flourish. It has
concentration and power, though it’s light
on its feet.

A glorious rendition of the variety, the enticing bouquet presents black and purple fruit purity
with nuances of rich floral, warm spice, thyme, and cedar. It’s wonderfully expressed on the
palate, with density and power, poise and structure, plush texture, and a supple mouthfeel.
Tannins are ultra-fine and in abundance, offering a sturdy grip while remaining velvety and
harmonious.

Vineyard Cultivation

Bullnose Syrah is Te Mata Estate's flagship syrah, named after the Bullnose vineyard and its vintage motor-car namesake, in Hawke's Bay. Founded in 1896 and family-owned by the Bucks since 1974, Te Mata sources its syrah from warm, free-draining red-metal gravels around the Bridge Pa Triangle, a site well suited to the variety's need for warmth and ripeness. Hawke's Bay's sunny, moderately maritime climate allows syrah to develop its blackberry, pepper and floral perfume while retaining freshness. The 2024 season produced fruit of purity and concentration, giving a medium-bodied yet powerful wine that stays light on its feet, with the spice and graphite grip characteristic of the site.

Vinification

Hand-picked syrah was fermented on skins to draw out the wine's red and blue fruit, cracked-pepper spice and firm, graphite-like tannin. Maturation took place in French oak, a portion new, chosen to support the fruit and add toasted-hazelnut and biscuit-spice nuance while keeping tannins ultra-fine and velvety. The winemaking favours purity and poise over weight, yielding a wine of density and power that still feels agile, finishing long with a savoury flourish. Oak is integrated rather than overt, framing the plush texture and abundant, harmonious tannins.
