Terrace Edge is a certified-organic, family-owned estate in the Waipara Valley of North Canterbury, New Zealand, run by the Chapman family who bought the former sheep farm in 1999 and planted olives before establishing the vineyards. The property sits on a terrace whose sun-drenched edge descends sharply to the Waipara River, an aspect and free-draining soil profile well suited to ripening Syrah in this cool, dry inland climate. Around 2.25 hectares are planted to Syrah. Viticulture is fully organic under Pete Chapman's management, with hand-work in the vineyard. In the estate's Syrah style, hand-picked fruit is destemmed, or partly retained as whole bunches, and wild or cultured-fermented in small open vessels with gentle hand-plunging to build the wine's plush, silky texture and violet lift. Following pressing the wine is matured in French oak, a portion seasoned rather than new, to frame the Black Doris plum, blueberry, olive and toasted-almond characters while preserving freshness and length. Malolactic fermentation completes in barrel.
