Description
Hacienda El Ternero stands as one of Rioja's most historic estates, with origins as a monastery site dating back to the 11th century. Located at 650 metres in the cool, wind-buffeted foothills of the Obarenes mountains in Rioja Alta, the estate is known for its meticulous, low-intervention approach and unique terroir. The Torno Crianza is produced entirely from Tempranillo grown on clay and iron-rich soils, hand-harvested at optimal ripeness from the estate's mature, high-altitude vines. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel to enhance primary fruit expression before the wine is aged for 12 months in second- and third-use French oak barrels, allowing subtle integration of oak complexity without overwhelming the wine's freshness. Following barrel maturation, the wine rests further in bottle, developing secondary aromas. On the nose, it reveals layers of violets, wild berries, liquorice and cedar, while the palate is medium-bodied and elegant, with fine-grained tannins, vibrant acidity, and a savoury finish. A textbook Rioja Crianza, Torno is perfect for slow-cooked lamb, chargrilled vegetables, or hard Spanish cheeses, and demonstrates both the elegance and ageability of the estate's terroir.
