Description
Mahi Chardonnay 2023 is a meticulously crafted expression of Marlborough's cool-climate terroir, produced by Mahi Wines, a boutique winery founded in 2001 by Brian and Nicola Bicknell. The name "Mahi", meaning "your work, your craft" in Maori, reflects the winery's commitment to showcasing the individuality of various vineyard sites through sustainable and hands-off winemaking practices.
The 2023 vintage is sourced from three distinct vineyards: the Taylor Vineyard in Rapaura (19%), the Twin Valleys Vineyard (75%), and a small parcel of Clone 1066 from the Mahi home block (6%). The grapes were hand-picked and subjected to whole-cluster pressing. The resulting juice underwent fermentation in French oak barrels using indigenous yeasts, with approximately 11 months of maturation on yeast lees to enhance texture and complexity.
In the glass, Mahi Chardonnay 2023 presents a pale gold hue. The nose is expressive, offering aromas of ripe pear, lemon curd, and subtle hints of flint and baking spices. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with a creamy texture and balanced acidity, delivering flavors of apple pie, crème brûlée, and orange rind. The finish is polished and refined, showcasing the wine's underlying power.
This Chardonnay pairs well with a variety of dishes, including roasted chicken, grilled seafood, and creamy pasta. Its structure and complexity suggest it will continue to evolve gracefully over the next few years, making it suitable for both immediate enjoyment and short-term cellaring.
