    • Description

The Mahi Alchemy Chardonnay 2022 is a premium single-vineyard expression from Marlborough, New Zealand, crafted by Mahi Wines. Founded in 2001 by Brian and Nicola Bicknell, Mahi focuses on showcasing the individuality of various vineyard sites through sustainable and minimal-intervention winemaking practices. The name "Mahi" meaning "our work, our craft" in Maori, reflects the winery's dedication to quality and craftsmanship.

The 2022 vintage is sourced from a small parcel in the Badlands Vineyard, located in the Rapaura region of Marlborough. The area was once an old riverbed, resulting in soils rich in river stones, silt, and clay. Typically a warmer section of the valley, the fruit from this vineyard exhibits more tropical notes. The grapes were hand-picked and whole-cluster pressed, with the resulting juice transferred directly to French oak barrels for fermentation using indigenous yeasts. After fermentation, the wine aged on its yeast lees for fifteen months prior to bottling.

In the glass, the Mahi Alchemy Chardonnay 2022 presents a bright yellow-gold hue. The nose is complex, offering aromas of lemon confit, pastry, struck match, lanolin, and orange blossoms. The medium-bodied palate has a textural mouthfeel, focused acidity, and a strong reduced undertone. The wine is powerful yet balanced, with a salty, citrusy finish.

This Chardonnay pairs well with a variety of dishes, including prawn tempura, grilled swordfish steak, and Thai-style prawns with bamboo shoots and spring onion. Its complexity and texture make it suitable for both immediate enjoyment and short-term cellaring.
