Tasting Notes

Pieropan Amarone della Valpolicella 2019 is the estate's boldest red, crafted with the same commitment to clarity and terroir expression that defines their whites. Made from hand-harvested Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and Croatina grapes from the Monti Garbi vineyard, the fruit undergoes traditional appassimento (drying) for over 4 months before slow fermentation. Ageing takes place over 24 months in 500L French oak tonneaux, followed by further bottle refinement. The result is a dense, layered Amarone with dark cherry, cocoa, spice and balsamic complexity, framed by polished tannins and a long, dry finish. A benchmark expression of modern, site-driven Amarone.

Vineyard Cultivation

Pieropan is a long-established, family-run Veneto estate best known for Soave, which extended into the Valpolicella from 1998 with vineyards in the volcanic-influenced foothills. The Amarone is drawn from estate holdings planted to the traditional varieties Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella on basaltic and limestone-influenced soils, farmed organically. Grapes destined for Amarone are carefully selected for even ripeness and sound, healthy skins so they can withstand a long drying period. The 2019 season in the Veneto was regarded as a fine, balanced vintage, giving ripe, aromatic fruit with good freshness and structure.

Vinification

Hand-harvested bunches were laid to dry (appassimento) for several months, concentrating sugars and flavour, before a slow fermentation on skins. The wine was then matured in a combination of French oak tonneaux and large Slavonian oak casks, followed by extended bottle age, to build its dense dark-cherry and cocoa profile, velvety tannin and warming length. It is made in a comparatively fresh, savoury and site-driven style rather than an overtly sweet or jammy one.
