Tasting Notes

A radiant garnet hue introduces a medley of savoury, dark fruit, and floral scents, including forest floor, plum, mushroom, ripe cherry, cedar, raspberry, and azalea. The palate mirrors this complexity with layers of dark fruit, spice, and umami seamlessly woven together by a refreshing undercurrent of acidity. Its texture is opulent and mouth-filling, featuring a silky, fine tannin structure that builds in the mouth, ultimately leading to a prolonged and memorable finish.

This wine strikes a balance between power and allure, embodying the quintessential Bendigo Pinot style. Its zesty freshness, a result of elevated grape cultivation, makes it a captivating yet approachable choice even in its youth, while promising graceful development over the next 12+ years.

Critic Scores

Impressively complex and enticing, the wine shows dark plum, cured meat, fennel, porcini, and cedar characters on the nose. The concentrated palate exhibits outstanding depth and weight, combined with plush texture and bold tannins, making it brooding yet balanced with a persistent, sophisticated finish. At its best: 2026 to 2038.

The 2023 Bendigo Vineyard Pinot Noir is powerfully ripe and concentrated, and it has softer acidity than the Bannockburn tasted next to it. I like this wine very much… It really penetrates the palate with flavour and is built with such complexity and layers. Texturally, the tannins are plentiful but remain pliable, and there is a real garden-rose floral character here that persists beyond the intense cherries, raspberries and moss. This is a gorgeous wine, thoroughly recommended.

Deep ruby-black, slightly lighter on the rim. The nose is focused and rich, with aromas of plum, black cherry, blackberry, herb, fine spices and savoury elements. Medium-full bodied, aromas of black plum, cherry and blackberry entwined with dried herb, cinnamon bark, nutmeg, lavender and a touch of game. Tightly bounded, dusty tannins provide a fine grip and unfolding savoury herbs and gamey nuances. Fresh acidity carries spices and herbs to a bold, savoury finish.

About this Wine

Pinot Noir

A thin-skinned red grape known for its light body, red fruit character, and sensitivity to terroir, grown around the world.

Central Otago

Central Otago is the southernmost wine growing region in the world, located at a latitude of 45 degrees south, on New Zealand’s south island. A spectacular landscape makes the region one of the most scenic wine regions if not in the world then certainly in New Zealand. Central to the region is the tourist destination of Queenstown, which is a great base to make wine trips from. Heavy mineral deposits in silt loams are typical for the soils in Central Otago, but is unlike any other region in New Zealand. The Otago region is the countries only ‘continental ’ wine growing region. Pinot Noir is the flagship red varietal, which is very well suited to the regions large diurnal shifts (a large diurnal shift means a big difference between low and high temperatures) and also the regions long, cool and dry autumn. The Pinot Noirs coming out of the Otago region are most often fragrant, lush Pinot Noirs with silky textures and true fruit intensity. Aromatic whites also thrive, in particular Riesling where anything from bone-dry to very sweet can be made. Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and lesser amounts of Chardonnay is also made to a very high quality. Central Otago is in Jancis Robinson’s top five New World wine producing regions.
