The estate is based at Gibbston in Central Otago, and this is their newest addition to their Pinot Noir range.

The nose is immediately seductive with aromas of damson plum, dark cherry, red pear, and ripe raspberry complemented by savoury notes of wild sage and cedar, with a wisp of white blossom.

The wine is assertive, yet playful and will continue to develop for well over a decade.

Tasting Notes

“The inaugural Valli Pisa Pinot Noir comes from Highgrange Vineyard, an elevated site on Mt. Pisa. The nose is immediately seductive with aromas of damson plum, dark cherry, red pear, and ripe raspberry complemented by savoury notes of wild sage and cedar, with a wisp of white blossom. The palate is silky and rich with wonderful layers of red fruit and spice woven together by an abundance of fine tannin and bright acidity. The wine is assertive, yet playful and will continue to develop for well over a decade. I am excited to see where it will take us!” Jen Parr - October 2024

Critic Scores

Combining fabulous fruit purity with elegant complexity, the wine shows sweet cherry, wild strawberry, floral, baking spice and assorted nut aromas on the nose. The palate delivers richly textured mouthfeel with succulent fruit intensity and spicy nuances. This is soothing and plush with a prolonged, delectable finish. At its best: 2026 to 2036.

Aromas of dried strawberries, citrus and stones show through clearly on the nose, following through to a medium body with fine, tight and pointed tannins that give texture and tension to this young pinot. Long and lively. Polished at the end. Drink or hold.

The 2023 Pisa Pinot Noir is a new cuvee in the range - at least, new to The Wine Advocate - and continues the frankly stellar run of wines in this 2023 release. Supple, intensely red-fruited, elegant, persistent and finely structured, this is one of the more 'obvious' wines in the lineup. Juicy, spicy, mineral and delicate, with great drive and pace through the finish

New, raw and ripe bouquet with a core of dark berries and black currant, spices from oak and fruit then a light sweetness also from the oak and alcohol. Firm and dry with flavours of dark berries and savoury spiced plums, firm tannins and plenty of acidity frame the fruit nicely. Taut and new too with some palate tickle and settling in time still needed. Best drinking from 2026 through 2034.

Perfumed pot-pourri, stem and incense of whole bunch leads to a fruit-sweet palate of red berry with savoury olive and sun-dried tomato complexity. The tannins are firm and angular, needing considerable time to resolve into the otherwise generously fruity core. Savoury tones are dominant on the finish, with plenty of sinewy power yet to unfurl.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

Valli, founded in 1998 by Central Otago pioneer Grant Taylor and based at Gibbston, makes single-vineyard Pinot Noirs from across Otago's sub-regions. This Pisa Pinot Noir is the newest addition to the range, drawn from the Pisa district on the western side of the Cromwell basin, where free-draining schist and glacial-gravel soils and warm, dry days give ripe, generous fruit while cold nights hold the acid line. The result is a wine of fabulous fruit purity and elegant complexity, showing damson plum, dark cherry, red pear and ripe raspberry lifted by savoury wild sage and cedar. The cool, low-cropping 2023 season concentrated the fruit and its savoury, mineral character.

Vinification

Hand-picked fruit was fermented in Valli's low-intervention style, with whole-bunch inclusion, indigenous yeast and gentle handling to build the richly textured mouthfeel and fine, tight, pointed tannins critics describe. The wine was matured in French oak, a measured proportion new, to add subtle spice while preserving the wine's drive, minerality and succulent red-fruit intensity. The low yields of the cool 2023 vintage gave concentration and tension, producing a supple, intensely red-fruited, finely structured and persistent Pinot with great pace through the finish. Exact whole-bunch percentage, new-oak proportion and elevage length for this new cuvee are not published and would need verification.

About this Wine

Pinot Noir

A thin-skinned red grape known for its light body, red fruit character, and sensitivity to terroir, grown around the world.

Central Otago

Central Otago is the southernmost wine growing region in the world, located at a latitude of 45 degrees south, on New Zealand’s south island. A spectacular landscape makes the region one of the most scenic wine regions if not in the world then certainly in New Zealand. Central to the region is the tourist destination of Queenstown, which is a great base to make wine trips from. Heavy mineral deposits in silt loams are typical for the soils in Central Otago, but is unlike any other region in New Zealand. The Otago region is the countries only ‘continental ’ wine growing region. Pinot Noir is the flagship red varietal, which is very well suited to the regions large diurnal shifts (a large diurnal shift means a big difference between low and high temperatures) and also the regions long, cool and dry autumn. The Pinot Noirs coming out of the Otago region are most often fragrant, lush Pinot Noirs with silky textures and true fruit intensity. Aromatic whites also thrive, in particular Riesling where anything from bone-dry to very sweet can be made. Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and lesser amounts of Chardonnay is also made to a very high quality. Central Otago is in Jancis Robinson’s top five New World wine producing regions.
