Tasting Notes

The Ata Rangi Celebre Syrah Cabernet Merlot 2022 is a bold, full-bodied red blend from Martinborough that expresses both power and elegance. The composition is 47% Merlot, 37% Syrah, 9% Cabernet Franc and 7% Malbec, with a final alcohol of about 13.4% ABV. The fruit is drawn from mature estate vineyards on free-draining gravel soils, and after fermentation the wine is matured in French oak (roughly 22 months) to round tannins and build structure. In the glass it presents a deep ruby hue. On the nose there is a perfumed bouquet of rose petal, lavender, boysenberry, black cardamom and silky dark plum. The palate is vibrant and supple, carrying flavours of pomegranate, cranberry, black cherry and thyme, underpinned by fine, polished tannins and fresh acidity. The finish is long and smooth, with a lingering smoky-herbal note. Though approachable now, this vintage will continue to develop beautifully for at least a decade.

Vineyard Cultivation

Ata Rangi was founded by Clive Paton in 1980 on an initial five-hectare block on the Martinborough Terrace, where he planted the vine material that became the renowned Abel clone of Pinot Noir. The estate gained organic certification in 2014 and remains family-run. Celebre draws on the estate's warmer, free-draining gravel sites suited to later-ripening Bordeaux varieties and Syrah, farmed organically with low yields. The 2022 vintage was difficult across much of New Zealand, with rain pressure demanding rigorous canopy management and selective hand-picking; the resulting red is medium-weight, favouring fragrance and structure over power in a Right Bank-inspired blend.

Vinification

The 2022 Celebre is a blend led by Merlot at around 47%, with roughly 37% Syrah, 9% Cabernet Franc and 7% Malbec, each variety fermented separately. Fruit was hand-picked and fermented in open-top vessels using wild yeast, with hand plunging for gentle extraction of colour and fine tannin. After pressing and completion of malolactic fermentation, the wine was matured for around twelve months in French oak barrels before blending. The style is savoury and medium-bodied, combining Syrah's spice and pepper with the plummy, structured Bordeaux component. Alcohol is around 13.4%.
