Description
The Bergère family established their eponymous Champagne house in 1949 in Fèrebrianges, at the southern edge of the Côte des Blancs. Farming around 65 acres of vines with a focus on Chardonnay, they produce wines from estate fruit and selected growers. The Origine Brut cuvée, presented here in half-bottle format, is built primarily from Chardonnay tempered by Pinot Noir and a touch of Pinot Meunier. Grapes are hand harvested and pressed in traditional Coquard presses; primary fermentation occurs at low temperature in enamel and stainless steel tanks, with a fraction in neutral oak for added texture. Malolactic fermentation proceeds to soften the acids. Reserve wines account for roughly 40 per cent of the blend, ensuring depth and consistency. The second fermentation in bottle is followed by at least three years on lees before disgorgement and a moderate dosage. With 12% alcohol, Origine shows pale lemon colour and persistent bubbles. Aromas of citrus, green pear and hawthorn blossom precede a palate that is lively, creamy and balanced by a chalky finish. Ideal as an aperitif or with light seafood, this half-bottle offers a snapshot of the house style.
