Description
The Dubourdieu family’s influence on the world of wine spans generations. George, the master craftsman; Pierre, the visionary; Denis, the celebrated vinegrower and authority on white wine; and now Fabrice and Jean-Jacques, the capable heirs, have each left an indelible mark on the industry.
Classified as a Second Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Barsac ranking, Château Doisy-Daëne is celebrated for its exceptional terroir. The Barsac plateau, a rare geological feature in Bordeaux, consists of a thin layer of red, clayey sand over limestone. In summer, the porous limestone gradually releases winter-stored water to the vines, protecting them from drought. This unique soil structure imparts an exquisite finesse to the estate’s white wines.
The first vintage of Extravagant de Doisy-Daëne dates back to 1990. Pierre Dubourdieu fondly remembers this daring experiment: "My son Denis was curious about the potential of Sauvignon Blanc heavily affected by noble rot and left to concentrate as much as possible. During the Doisy-Daëne Sec harvest, we left just two bunches per vine on selected plots and waited until early November. By then, the grapes were intensely concentrated, candied, even slightly purple, their skins consumed by Botrytis and the pulp clinging to the seeds. The resulting sugar levels were extraordinary—36° to 40° of potential alcohol."
This remarkable wine is distinguished by its explosion of noble rot-enhanced fruit, strength, balance, and the intricate subtlety of its flavours. The Doisy-Daëne style captures both the greatness of its limestone terroir and the family’s refined aesthetic approach, creating crystalline white wines that combine power and freshness, remaining eternally youthful.
