Along with the chardonnay, this is an exciting new addition to the Giant Steps range. A blend of all the single-vineyard wines and mainly from the vineyards in the Upper Yarra.

40% whole bunches. Gently brooding with aromas of wild black cherries and raspberries along with some whole-bunch–derived fennel seed spice and a touch of violets.

Concentrated, with far more stuffing that the Yarra Pinot. Ripe, suave tannins ensure this will be worth cellaring for at least five to eight years.

Tasting Notes

Giant Steps Circle of Fifths Pinot Noir 2024 is a compelling addition to the celebrated Giant Steps portfolio, crafted predominantly from Upper Yarra vineyards known for their exceptional terroir. This expertly blended wine combines all the single-vineyard selections, incorporating 40% whole bunches to enhance complexity and structure.

The wine opens with gently brooding aromas of wild black cherries and vibrant raspberries, beautifully layered with subtle fennel seed spice derived from whole-bunch fermentation and delicate floral notes of violets. On the palate, it reveals a concentrated and richly textured profile that offers significantly more depth and stuffing compared to traditional Yarra Valley Pinot Noirs.

Ripe, suave tannins provide a refined backbone, delivering a harmonious balance and ensuring excellent aging potential. Designed for cellaring, this Pinot Noir promises to evolve gracefully over the next five to eight years, developing further complexity and richness.

The Upper Yarra region contributes cool climate characteristics that result in vibrant fruit purity and nuanced spice elements, making the 2024 vintage particularly expressive. This wine exemplifies the distinctive elegance and intensity that have become synonymous with Giant Steps, enhancing its reputation among premium Australian Pinot Noirs.

Perfectly suited for enthusiasts seeking a bold yet refined Pinot Noir, this release stands out for its meticulous craftsmanship and layered flavor profile. Vineyard Cultivation

Giant Steps was founded in 1997 by Phil Sexton in the Yarra Valley and is now regarded as one of Australia's leading single-vineyard specialists, named among the world's top wineries. Circle of Fifths is a multi-vineyard cuvee assembled from the estate's own sites, drawing principally on the cooler, higher-altitude Upper Yarra vineyards - Tarraford, Sexton, Primavera, Applejack and the elevated Bastard Hill - alongside lower Yarra parcels. Soils range from grey loams over clay in the valley floor to the red volcanic ground at Bastard Hill, all farmed with a low-intervention, site-focused approach. The 2024 growing season in the Yarra was a settled, moderate vintage that delivered ripe but fresh Pinot Noir with good concentration, allowing the individual blocks to be blended into a single expression.

Vinification

Fruit is picked by site and hand-sorted, with the parcels vinified separately before blending. Circle of Fifths carries roughly 40% whole bunches, the balance destemmed, with fermentation using indigenous yeasts in open vessels and gentle hand-plunging to build the wine's savoury, spiced complexity. After a cool soak and fermentation, the wine is pressed and moved to French oak for maturation, with a measured proportion of new barrels so that oak frames rather than dominates the fruit. Malolactic conversion completes in barrel. The final blend is drawn together over multiple tasting sessions to capture the strengths of each vineyard, producing a wine with fleshy fruit, whole-bunch fennel-seed spice, violet lift and ripe, supple tannins built for five to eight years' cellaring.
