Tasting Notes

When opening a bottle of 2024 HAWKSHEAD Pinot Rosé together with the NZ Nature Fund you help to save and protect some of our most endangered species.

The HAWKSHEAD 2024 Rosé reflects the Pinot Noir grape variety it has been crafted from. Classic, dry and more savoury in style.

Our Pinot Rosé is brightly coloured and is deliciously crisp with fresh yet ripe lifted fruit flavours of red currant, bramble, musk florals and summer sun-warmed wild herb aromatics.

The palate sways seamless between fruit and floral notes, savoury undertones and mouthwatering bright acidity. Great texture and weight add to a deliciously juicy and refreshing finish with great lengths.

In keeping with our Hawkshead style we again created a Rosé that shows elegance, purity of fruit with texture and subtle complexity.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

Hawkshead is a family-owned Central Otago label run by Denis and Vicki Marshall, drawing on estate fruit in Gibbston and the Cromwell Basin. This rose is made entirely from Pinot Noir, the region's signature variety, grown on free-draining schist and glacial-gravel soils in a dry continental climate. Hot days and cold nights over a long, cool ripening season give bright natural acidity and fine, savoury fruit, ideal for a dry, food-friendly rose. Vineyard work is low-intervention, with careful crop management to keep fruit fresh and delicately flavoured. The wine supports the NZ Nature Fund, and the house aim is a classic, dry and savoury style showing elegance, purity of fruit and subtle complexity.

Vinification

Fruit for the rose was picked to preserve acidity and delicate colour. In the pink style typical of the estate, juice was run off Pinot Noir skins after a short maceration (or pressed directly) to give a pale, savoury wine, then fermented cool in a reductive manner to protect its red-fruit and floral aromatics. The wine was finished dry, favouring texture and structure over sweetness, in keeping with Hawkshead's more savoury, Provencal-leaning interpretation of rose. Exact maceration time and vessel were not published.

About this Wine

Pinot Noir

A thin-skinned red grape known for its light body, red fruit character, and sensitivity to terroir, grown around the world.

Central Otago

Central Otago is the southernmost wine growing region in the world, located at a latitude of 45 degrees south, on New Zealand’s south island. A spectacular landscape makes the region one of the most scenic wine regions if not in the world then certainly in New Zealand. Central to the region is the tourist destination of Queenstown, which is a great base to make wine trips from. Heavy mineral deposits in silt loams are typical for the soils in Central Otago, but is unlike any other region in New Zealand. The Otago region is the countries only ‘continental ’ wine growing region. Pinot Noir is the flagship red varietal, which is very well suited to the regions large diurnal shifts (a large diurnal shift means a big difference between low and high temperatures) and also the regions long, cool and dry autumn. The Pinot Noirs coming out of the Otago region are most often fragrant, lush Pinot Noirs with silky textures and true fruit intensity. Aromatic whites also thrive, in particular Riesling where anything from bone-dry to very sweet can be made. Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and lesser amounts of Chardonnay is also made to a very high quality. Central Otago is in Jancis Robinson’s top five New World wine producing regions.
