Rays Road is Kumeu River’s new vineyard site in Hawkes Bay. This limestone hillside is at 180 m altitude, with a northerly aspect. It is dry-farmed to yield high quality grapes for wine under the Rays Road name for our Kumeu River label.

The ripeness and richness from 2024 has given us a Rays Road Chardonnay with more depth and texture than we have seen over the last few years .

The palate is showing more density and concentration than previous vintages and this is setting up to be a very fine Chardonnay vineyard.

Critic Scores

Tangy and flavourful on a focused and energized palate. Medium-bodied, bright and fresh, with sliced Asian pear flavors that are pristine and vivid. Drink now.

"Kumeu’s sole Hawke’s Bay vineyard project is gaining maturity, and with that comes complexity. Where a few vintages ago this was the most overtly fruity of the range of single vineyard Chards, 2024 is more subdued. The tropical and stone-fruit aromas are still present, but they share the stage with intriguing spice and mineral characters. There’s a unique acid structure to this wine, like a tart apple rather than citrus. It buoys salt-flecked fruit and nut flavours and a creamy texture. A small but excellent vintage - nab a few bottles while you can"!

The 2024 Rays Road Chardonnay leads with a spicy, almost exotic nose, while the palate strides in smooth, sleek movements. This is creamy and a little nutty, and there are wet limestone notes in the mouth, alongside yellow citrus and layers of dried herbs, cracked fennel seeds, ginger root and fruit flavors. A lovely wine, it's weighted on the back palate and long through the finish. I tasted this as a tank sample prior to filtration and bottling. The Ray's Road vineyard is on a limestone base and has been significantly worked and replanted since the Kumeu River purchase in 2021.

Subtle at first, with mouthwatering citrus and apple flavors, plus notes of salted, preserved lemon that are crisp and focused. Details of tarragon, toasted sesame seed and Himalayan sea salt expand on the long, expressive finish, where a hint of candied ginger lingers.

Vineyard Cultivation

Rays Road is Kumeu River's Hawke's Bay project, purchased in 2021 and the family's first vineyard outside Kumeu. The site is a limestone hillside at around 180 metres altitude with a northerly aspect, dry-farmed to keep yields low and concentration high. The vineyard has been substantially reworked and replanted since acquisition. Warmer and drier than the family's home ground near Auckland, the Hawke's Bay location gives riper stone-fruit and tropical characters while the limestone base supplies mineral drive and a distinctive tart-apple acidity. The 2024 season was small but of high quality, delivering more depth, density and textural richness than the site's earlier releases as the young vineyard gains maturity.

Vinification

Grapes were hand-picked and whole-bunch pressed, with the juice fermented using indigenous yeasts in French oak barriques following the estate's long-held Burgundian approach. The wine passed through full malolactic fermentation, which contributes the creamy, nutty note observed by tasters, and was matured on lees to build the sleek, weighted texture that marks the 2024. Oak is used as a frame rather than a flavour, allowing the limestone-derived minerality, yellow citrus and spice to lead. The bottling carries a firm, apple-like acid spine that lends length and freshness on the back palate.
