    • Description

Lake Hayes Pinot Noir 2023 is a distinctive expression of Central Otago's Pisa sub-region, produced by Lake Hayes Wines, a label under the Amisfield Wine Company. Established in 1906, Amisfield is renowned for its commitment to quality and terroir-driven wines. The Lake Hayes range, introduced as a more accessible line, reflects the same dedication to craftsmanship and showcases the unique characteristics of the region's vineyards.

The 2023 vintage was sourced from select blocks across the Pisa sub-region, known for its free-draining schist soils and cool continental climate, which contribute to the development of aromatic and structured Pinot Noir. The grapes were hand-harvested and destemmed before undergoing a 3-day cold soak to enhance color extraction and flavor intensity. Fermentation occurred over seven days with gentle plunging to balance tannin extraction. Post-fermentation, the wine was pressed and matured in French oak barriques for 8 months, allowing for integration of flavors and development of complexity.

In the glass, the 2023 Pinot Noir presents a deep ruby hue. The nose is expressive, offering aromas of dark cherry, black doris plum, and subtle earthy notes. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with a silky texture, balanced acidity, and fine-grained tannins. Flavors of ripe red fruits are complemented by hints of spice and a touch of oak, leading to a harmonious and lingering finish.

This wine is versatile in food pairings, complementing dishes such as duck, venison, and lamb. Its structure and balance suggest it will continue to evolve gracefully over the next 3–5 years. Lake Hayes Pinot Noir 2023 offers a refined and approachable example of Central Otago Pinot Noir, reflecting the region's unique terroir and the winemaker's skillful approach.
