Description
Lake Hayes Wines was founded with a clear focus on expressing the distinctive terroir of Central Otago, one of New Zealand’s most acclaimed cool-climate regions. Drawing fruit primarily from Alexandra and the Lake Hayes sub-regions, the winery benefits from vineyards planted on free-draining schist soils and influenced by the region’s diurnal temperature swings, which slow ripening and preserve acidity. This careful site selection has been key to Lake Hayes’ consistent production of vibrant, well-structured wines since its inception.
For the 2023 Pinot Gris, grapes were hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and immediately pressed to limit skin contact and maintain freshness. Fermentation was carried out in stainless steel tanks with selected yeasts, emphasizing varietal clarity and aromatic purity. After fermentation, the wine spent three months on fine lees, adding weight and complexity without compromising its crispness.
The wine pours a pale straw color and presents a nose of clean, ripe pear and melon with subtle spice hints. On the palate, it is balanced and juicy, with a bright acidity that keeps the finish fresh and lively. This is a straightforward, approachable Pinot Gris that reflects the fruit and soil characteristics of its Central Otago origins without excessive richness or overt sweetness.
Lake Hayes Pinot Gris 2023 pairs well with a broad range of foods - from pork and mildly spiced dishes to mushrooms and charcuterie - making it a flexible option for everyday drinking as well as casual entertaining.
