Tasting Notes

Pyramid Valley Angel Flower Pinot Noir 2023 is a refined expression of premium New Zealand Pinot Noir, crafted with a focus on purity, detail and sustainable viticulture. Produced according to organic and biodynamic principles, this elegant red wine reflects Pyramid Valley’s commitment to authentic, low-intervention winemaking.

Bright ruby in colour, the wine opens with an expressive floral bouquet of rose petals, dried herbs and summer berries, layered with a distinctive gravelly savouriness. On the palate, finely detailed mineral and savoury notes combine with a subtle hint of iodine, berry compote and fresh sour cherry flavours. Fine-grained tannins and vibrant freshness provide balance, length and graceful structure.

The fruit was carefully hand sorted, fully destemmed and fermented with wild yeasts using infusion methods over 25 days. Following fermentation, the wine was settled in tank before being transferred to French wooden barrels for 18 months of élevage. It was then bottled unfined and unfiltered, preserving the wine’s natural character and nuanced expression.

Elegant, mineral and complex, Angel Flower Pinot Noir 2023 is a beautifully focused red wine with floral lift, savoury depth and the freshness to develop further in bottle.

Critic Scores

Closed at first but soon opens up with an opulently perfumed nose, layered red/black fruits, florals and spice; a lot of earth and vinosity here, too. Hard to tease it all apart, both on nose and palate. Textural and compact with wonderfully integrated fruit/oak tannins and a spine of bright acidity. Clearly built for the long haul while offering a lot of joy already. Biodynamic.

Sourced from a 0.8ha block of biodynamically farmed pinot noir on the Pyramid Valley Waikari estate. A beautiful, complex-smelling wine with brooding dark plum and cherry fruits, cut with spice, blood orange, amaro herbs, raked leaves, pressed wildflowers, twiggy nuance and crushed stone. So calm and composed on the palate with a sapid calcareous cadence, fine, chalky tannin grip and a long, gamey retreat.

Having made no Earth Smoke in 2021 due to spring frosts and cool flowering ravaging the yield, it's a welcome return in 2022. Translucent, pure and delicately textured, this Pinot Noir shows a fine hand and the confidence to be hands off. The wine is calm; in the mouth, it gives the impression that a hush has descended. It is attractively scented - full of dried herbs, cherry, festive spice, violets and a hint of smoke. There's plentiful concentration without weight. The tannins are pliant, providing the finest coating for your palate. Perhaps not as long as it could be, but I'm really nitpicking here.

A crispness, a pulse of tart cherry, a crunch of cranberry, some nougat licks and woody spice with sappy pomegranate juice, a touch of hazelnut paste with bergamot tea, sage leaf and dried rosemary amongst the mix of characters here. It’s got volume of intense, granitic minerality and a grumbling swish of pumice-like, almost Italianate texture to tannins amongst the vibrancy of fruit character.

Pale garnet. Great fruit concentration well handled. Full of zest and life with great judgement regarding extraction. Tannin/acid/fruit balance just right! Peppery note.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

Pyramid Valley is a celebrated North Canterbury estate at Waikari, whose home vineyard sits on rare clay-limestone soils farmed organically and biodynamically. Angel Flower is one of the named single blocks on the estate, a small parcel of closely planted Pinot Noir worked entirely by hand and treated as a distinct terroir. The estate, founded by Mike and Claudia Weersing and continued under new ownership with a dedicated winemaking team, holds biodynamic certification and pursues purity and site transparency above all. The 2023 season in North Canterbury delivered ripe, expressive fruit, and the block's calcareous soils lend the wine its gravelly savouriness, mineral cut and floral lift. Yields are naturally low, reflecting the block's exacting management.

Vinification

Fruit is carefully hand-sorted and fully destemmed, then fermented with wild yeasts native to the vineyard using a gentle infusion method rather than vigorous extraction, macerating for around 25 days to draw fine, grainy tannin without hardness. After fermentation the wine is settled in tank before being transferred to French wooden barrels for an elevage of around 18 months. It is then bottled unfined and unfiltered to preserve texture and detail. The infusion technique and biodynamic, minimal-intervention cellar work give a mineral, savoury Pinot Noir with berry-compote and sour-cherry fruit, a finely detailed palate and long-ageing structure.
