Carefully hand sorted, fully destemmed and fermented with yeasts from the vineyard, gently fermented using infusion methods for 25 days. Settled in tank before being transferred to French wooden barrels. Elevage of 18 months, then bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Vibrant garnet with exceptional clarity. The nose has brooding aromas of savoury dark fruits, spicy complexity and florals. The palate is dense and compact, with a core of umami raspberries and a savoury, resinous complexity surrounded by soft, fine tannins and a saline, palate-activating structure.

Critic Scores

Closed at first but soon opens up with an opulently perfumed nose, layered red/black fruits, florals and spice; a lot of earth and vinosity here, too. Hard to tease it all apart, both on nose and palate. Textural and compact with wonderfully integrated fruit/oak tannins and a spine of bright acidity. Clearly built for the long haul while offering a lot of joy already. Biodynamic.

Sourced from a 0.8ha block of biodynamically farmed pinot noir on the Pyramid Valley Waikari estate. A beautiful, complex-smelling wine with brooding dark plum and cherry fruits, cut with spice, blood orange, amaro herbs, raked leaves, pressed wildflowers, twiggy nuance and crushed stone. So calm and composed on the palate with a sapid calcareous cadence, fine, chalky tannin grip and a long, gamey retreat.

Having made no Earth Smoke in 2021 due to spring frosts and cool flowering ravaging the yield, it's a welcome return in 2022. Translucent, pure and delicately textured, this Pinot Noir shows a fine hand and the confidence to be hands off. The wine is calm; in the mouth, it gives the impression that a hush has descended. It is attractively scented - full of dried herbs, cherry, festive spice, violets and a hint of smoke. There's plentiful concentration without weight. The tannins are pliant, providing the finest coating for your palate. Perhaps not as long as it could be, but I'm really nitpicking here.

A crispness, a pulse of tart cherry, a crunch of cranberry, some nougat licks and woody spice with sappy pomegranate juice, a touch of hazelnut paste with bergamot tea, sage leaf and dried rosemary amongst the mix of characters here. It’s got volume of intense, granitic minerality and a grumbling swish of pumice-like, almost Italianate texture to tannins amongst the vibrancy of fruit character.

Pale garnet. Great fruit concentration well handled. Full of zest and life with great judgement regarding extraction. Tannin/acid/fruit balance just right! Peppery note.

Vineyard Cultivation

Earth Smoke is a named single block on Pyramid Valley's Waikari home vineyard in North Canterbury, planted to Pinot Noir on the estate's distinctive clay-limestone soils and farmed organically and biodynamically. The estate is certified biodynamic and treats each block as an individual terroir, with Earth Smoke prized for its brooding, savoury and darker-fruited character. No Earth Smoke was made in 2021 after spring frosts and cool flowering slashed the yield, making later releases a welcome return. The 2023 North Canterbury season ripened the block's low yields fully, giving vibrant, dense fruit. Hand-tending, careful canopy management and calcareous soils underpin the wine's saline structure and resinous, spicy complexity.

Vinification

Fruit is carefully hand-sorted and fully destemmed, then fermented with yeasts from the vineyard using a gentle infusion method over around 25 days to build a compact core and soft, fine tannin without heavy extraction. After fermentation the wine is settled in tank before transfer to French wooden barrels for an elevage of around 18 months, then bottled unfined and unfiltered. The hands-off, biodynamic cellar approach preserves the block's dark, savoury fruit, umami-raspberry core and saline, palate-activating structure. The infusion technique and long, gentle maturation give a dense but translucent Pinot Noir built for extended cellaring.
