Description
Rock Ferry is recognised as one of Marlborough's leading organic producers, established with a focus on crafting wines that highlight both varietal definition and the character of individual vineyard sites. While best known for aromatic whites and Chardonnay, Rock Ferry has consistently demonstrated that Marlborough's diverse soils and climates can also produce compelling examples of traditionally Italian and Austrian varieties. Nebbiolo from the Corners vineyard in Rapaura is one such expression, produced in very limited volumes and representing one of the region's most promising alternative plantings.
In 2021, hand-picked fruit was destemmed to open-top puncheons for fermentation, with daily foot-treading to encourage gentle extraction. After pressing, the wine matured for fourteen months in seasoned French oak barrels, a regime chosen to frame Nebbiolo's naturally high acidity and firm tannins without overt oak influence.
The resulting wine shows the classical markers of the variety: lifted aromas of red cherry, rose and dried herbs underpinned by subtle tar and spice. The palate is finely etched, carrying bright acidity and robust tannins that provide both immediate structure and the promise of long-term cellaring. A precise and serious Marlborough Nebbiolo, it reflects both the adaptability of the grape and Rock Ferry's commitment to exploring alternative varieties within the region.
