Description
Schubert Wines, established in Martinborough by Kai Schubert and Marion Deimling, brings a European sensibility to New Zealand winemaking, with Syrah crafted in a style inspired by the Northern Rhone. Cool-climate conditions emphasise fragrance, spice and structure over sheer weight.
In 2022, hand-picked Syrah was destemmed, cold-soaked and fermented in stainless steel before pressing. The young wine then matured for thirty-three months in French oak barriques, with around 35% new oak, allowing depth and complexity to develop while retaining varietal precision.
The finished Syrah is concentrated and savoury, opening with dark plum, black olive and cracked pepper alongside hints of clove and spice. Firm tannins and a long, structured finish give the wine both immediate impact and cellaring potential, making it a benchmark cool-climate Syrah from Martinborough.
