Tasting Notes

Te Mata Elston Chardonnay 2024 is a distinguished expression of New Zealand’s fine winemaking tradition, crafted with precision and care to deliver a sophisticated and memorable experience. Named after Elston Hall in Nottinghamshire, the ancestral home of Charles Darwin’s family, this wine carries a legacy of refinement and exploration.

This Chardonnay showcases the perfect harmony of traditional winemaking techniques combined with modern innovation. Partial malolactic fermentation enhances the wine’s creamy texture, while extended lees contact and a carefully balanced blend of new and old oak lend layers of complexity and depth. The result is a wine that is both zesty and richly nuanced.

On the nose, expect an alluring bouquet of white flesh stone fruit such as ripe peach and nectarine, complemented by bright lemon pith, inviting savoury pastry notes, hints of nougat, and the subtle warmth of roasted cashews. These aromas unfold seamlessly into a palate that is lively and vibrant, underscored by a fine mineral backbone that reflects the unique terroir of this renowned region.

Crafted in a vintage marked by ideal growing conditions, the 2024 Elston Chardonnay captures the essence of its origin with elegance and poise. This wine is a testament to the meticulous vineyard management and artisanal winemaking that Te Mata is celebrated for, making it a standout choice for connoisseurs seeking a Chardonnay with both character and finesse.

Critic Scores

The wine combines generosity, complexity, and refinement. The elegantly expressed bouquet
shows ripe apricot, lemon peel, oatmeal, nougat, biscotti, and fine oak characters with a hint of
flint. The palate delivers an impressive drive and flow, complemented by a richly textured
mouthfeel and perfectly pitched acidity, finishing expansive and engaging

Focused and textured, this is a beautiful follow-up after the terrific 2023. A powerful chardonnay that highlights the quality of the fruit. 100% barrel fermented and aged.

It’s a luxurious affair with ample fruit,
oak in support, a savoury element,
oatmeal, a bright cut of citrus acidity
through a creamy nutty gloss. Finish has
some lemon zest and excellent length
with a little twerk of grainy grip to close.
Very good.

Vineyard Cultivation

Elston, Te Mata Estate's icon chardonnay, takes its name from Elston Hall in Nottinghamshire, ancestral home of Charles Darwin's family, whose wyvern crest marks the label. Te Mata, founded in 1896 and led by the Buck family since 1974, sources Elston from the Havelock Hills in Hawke's Bay, where elevated, north-facing slopes of limestone-influenced clay and loam encourage slow, even ripening and natural tension. Hawke's Bay's sunny, moderately maritime climate balances ripeness with freshness. Following the acclaimed 2023, the 2024 vintage yielded chardonnay of notable quality and drive, with ripe apricot, citrus and oatmeal character over a richly textured yet finely acidified frame.

Vinification

Superb-quality fruit was hand-harvested and whole-cluster pressed, then fully barrel-fermented and aged in French oak, combining new and older barrels for structure without excess. Extended lees contact builds the wine's creamy, nutty gloss, biscotti and nougat complexity and textured mouthfeel, while a partial malolactic conversion rounds the acidity yet keeps a bright citrus cut. The regime is one of restraint and precision: the oak supports a savoury, mineral core rather than dominating, and the wine finishes expansive and long with a fine, grainy grip. A powerful chardonnay that showcases the fruit.
