Tasting Notes

The Terroir al Limit Arbossar 2021 is a remarkable expression of Priorat’s heritage, crafted from 100% Carignan vines that are among the oldest in the region, with many dating back to 1910. Dominik Huber’s visionary approach revitalized these historic vines, embracing the challenges and beauty of this north-facing L’Arbossar vineyard. The result is a wine of extraordinary depth and purity, offering a captivating bouquet of fresh blue fruits, berries, and fragrant herbs like rosemary and sage.

This wine stands out for its sleek, intense profile, which is achieved through maturation exclusively in concrete and a carefully shortened élevage. The palate reveals a vibrant, focused character with fine tannins and a strikingly long, tangy finish. Praised by critics for its exceptional balance and elegance, the Arbossar 2021 has earned impressive scores, including 97 points from James Suckling and 96 points from Guia Penin. It’s a wine that reflects the soul of its ancient vines and the precision of modern winemaking, making it a standout choice for both immediate enjoyment and aging.

Critic Scores

Huge nose with fresh yet ripe blue fruit, berries, flowers, white pepper and ginseng. This has excellent depth of fruit on the palate with dissolved but supportive tannins. Really long and tangy finish. A wine that I’d want to finish a bottle. Lasting almost a minute with pure fruit. A naked beauty. Drink or hold.

Style: Defined aromas, complex, taut
Colour: Bright Cherry
Aroma: Expressive, varietal, elegant, fruit expression, wild herbs
Flavour: Flavourful, full of life, long, mineral

The 2021 Arbossar matured exclusively in concrete, and they also shortened the élevage because they saw that a longer élevage tired the wines a little too much and decided to bottle them before the following harvest. The wine is clean and precise, like a laser cut, with focus and red rather than black fruit. It's medium-bodied, has moderate alcohol, 13.5%, and very fine tannins. A surprisingly elegant Cariñena. This is a cool vineyard that delivers serious wines. 4,266 bottles were filled in July 2022. - Luis Gutiérrez

Vineyard Cultivation

Terroir al Limit, founded in 1999 by Dominik Huber and Albert Muñoz, works steep hillside parcels in Priorat's slate-dominated terrain. Their Arbossar vineyard sits on historic Pizarra negra (black slate) soils typical of the denomination, with vines planted on ancient stone terraces. The estate practices minimal intervention viticulture, eschewing chemical inputs in favour of organic and biodynamic principles. Carignan from these old-vine parcels shows the estate's signature mineral expression. The 2021 vintage was characterised by warm, dry conditions across Catalonia, concentrating flavours in the Carignan.

Vinification

Fruit was hand-selected and destemmed, then fermented with native yeasts in open vats without temperature control. The maceration was extended to extract colour and tannin structure whilst preserving the aromatic freshness that defines their house style. The wine remained in large-format wooden vessels and neutral oak, avoiding new oak influence to maintain purity. Bottling occurred without fining or filtration, preserving the wine's natural sediment and complexity. Minimal sulphite additions reflect the estate's natural-wine philosophy.
